"Screwdriver and hammer" method for me as well. It was a PITA but I eventually managed to pry that annoying washer off. If you have access to one, I highly recommend the dremel route. It will make the removal far easier.

The 2 methods mentioned above work well, but I recommend the Dremel method if you have access.

With a Dremel and cutting disc attachment, I just slice the clip on one side, you'll probably slice the plastic a little too but don't worry. Then, I pry the clip with a sharp flat head screwdriver and it comes off easily.

If you don't have a Dremel and have to use the hammer and screwdriver method, I usually use 2 screwdrivers, one small flat head and one big flat head. I've sharpened the small flat head screwdriver to make the end as sharp as possible, then hammer it in between the clip and the plastic shifter assembly. Using the larger screwdriver, insert it in to the gap created by hammering the small one in and pry around the clip working it off from each side. It may break, but that's good because it comes off easily then. Don't worry if you break it we include a couple of new ones with our Short Shifters.

I hope this helps.
