Questions about swapping a 2010 engine into an 05 after a burnt bearing
I've got an 05 tC and I have a blown motor due to a spun bearing. I have located a motor from a 2010 tC w/ 34k miles that got totaled. My buddy and I are going to do the motor swap, and I have a couple questions I was hoping the community here could help me out with.
I understand that the 07-10 engines have a different wiring harness and ECU. I am getting the 2010 harness w/ the engine as well as an 08-10 ECU (not sure on the year yet) from a manual trans car since the engine came from an automatic. My first question, is other than the harness and brainbox, do I need anything else to do the motor swap?
The second issue is that the engine appears to have a little damage on it, and I was wondering if I could use the parts from my 05 engine to replace what was damaged on the 2010 motor. I haven't seen it in person but it was described as "a gash in the timing chain cover and the upper oil pan", and I'm having a little difficulty determining where the actual damage is. Here are some pics:

Timing Chain Cover:
I haven't pulled my engine yet and the car is in my friend's garage, so I have no point of reference. I'm trying to figure out if anyone can confirm that both of these issues can be corrected with parts I have on my 05 motor. I also wouldn't mind any opinions about if I should skip this engine altogether in case the impact did more damage weakening the block that I can't see now but might come up later even if this can be fixed with parts from the old engine. The engine is going to run me about 1700.00 as is with roughly another 100.00 for harness and ECU. I can find another engine if necessary if this one is toast. Thanks in advance for any help the community can provide. It is greatly appreciated!

the problem is, the 05-06 engine is different in enough "slightly different" ways that they are different part numbers for many components in the engine. I wouldn't buy the 2010 engine you're looking at.. that damage is right at the flywheel housing! Looks like someone used a saw there! wow. and looks like they cut off the attachment point for the passenger side engine mount! ouch! And for $1700? no thanks, I'd keep looking.
when you asked "should I just skip this engine?" Your instincts were correct, keep looking. The other issue you'll have is if you swap a 2010 into an 2005, the ECU (main computer) is also different, so you'll have to swap that in. Try and look for a low mileage 05-06 engine instead. Just my $0.02.

So quick update...
I found another engine, and its from a 2010 as well. I'd emailed the pics posted above to PTuning, and they basically said the same thing about not using that engine and finding another one. The other thing they said that was throwing me off a bit was that I wouldn't need to change the wiring harness and ECU. Can anyone confirm if this is true? I thought the 08-10's had different sensors needing a different harness and a different pinout on the ECU for the new harness?
Here's the email they sent me:
Thanks again for any help! :D

He can use his 05 harness and ecu. He can use the timing cover from his 05. The damage to the bellhousing doesn’t look to bad but then again that part can break off at any time. I would pass on this motor and get another one that does not have damage to the engine block itself. The timing cover is not an issue.

I have a pre 04/2006 Scion TC that I swapped over to a 2010 2azfe.
There's no need to switch harnesses or ECU, just swap over all your sensors and also timing chain cover from your 2005 to the 2010 motor.
Good luck!
