Default Resonator help!?

Ok so I have the GReddy Evo2 axleback and I love the sound, but I just had 2.5" continued to the spipe and it is much more raspy than when the stock was on, if I put a resonator in the new pipe will that help get some of the raspiness out? Did the stock cat that was removed when I replaced the pipe make a difference in the sound in addition to the resonator?
