Default Short Shift Install Mystery

Hi guys,

I hate to have my first post be about something that I broke but...it is.

I installed a Megan Racing Short Shifter on my 09' Scion tC and nearing the end of the install (following the TWM install thread) the shifter was stuck— only able to move from first to second (barely).

Like an idiot, I forced it sideways and the little pin that holds the spring's tension snapped off.

After a good round of kicking my own ___, I drove it around the block to see if it worked properly and voila. It was fine. I have driven it for the past week with no problems arising and the shifter feels pretty good.

Now I'm not sure what that spring does but it is just hanging there now and the little plastic piece is gone.

What do I do? Is it important? Will it put stress on [anything]?

I searched far and wide and couldn't find anybody with the same problem.

Any feedback/info would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

if im not mistaken the spring is for springing back the shifter between gears, instead of just flopping around. possibly could move the shifter into gear from neutral. I put the same one on and my shifter is very stiff, the spring keeps it from being floppy.

It does feel a bit loose. Anything I could do about this? Would they replace the whole thing?

I had problems with the spring also, its a bit tricky to keep the spring in. if you see ur pic, when you get a chance to do it, open the spring as if it having tension, while the tension is on place the legs on the black part circled in ur pic while carefully placing the other part together. I hope this helps, its a pain but it needs to be there, if not you could accidently slip the shifter and grind.

I don't think I explained it well enough. That black piece is GONE. It snapped off.

oh shoot, didn't read it thoroughly I would cuz im cheap lol, try to drill a screw just the right size throught the black piece, so it don't obstruct nothing on the other side. I don't think they would replace only cuz u defaulted it, it sux. I don't think there is any thing on the other side were the piece goes. that might save you. I feel bad.

did u replace the rings that came with it. I don't remember the specific name but there are four and it raises the box completely making it harder to shift. more sporty feeling..

Yeah I think I might try that.

No I didn't install the bushings yet. Gonna do that when I do this fix. Would I be better off just going for it or calling the dealership and having them take a look?

Btw thanks for the responses! Super appreciated.

me personally i would try it only to save the money, just make sure it doesn't obstruct ne thing on the other side. the dealership will charge you to look at, and they charge by the hour plus the part( if they cant fix the piece). you can search your local junk yard for the box assembly or try this link ebay::

http://www.ebay.com/itm/05-2010-TC-5...098d9f&vxp=mtr

this for the whole assembly so you can try again lol 60+

Yeah I think I'll give it a go knowing it's only 60 to replace. Good call on the screw! Thanks for the link/info!

09' Flint Mica. I have only had the car for a little over a year and didn't have it with my down at school, so the mod list is pretty minimal:

Megan Short Shifter
RS1 Racing Pedals
12" Infinity Reference Subs x2
Dual Vented Box
1500W Audiopipe Mono D amp
Plasti Dipped Rims (minus lugs/center cap)
Debadged
Aggressive Overlays tinted tails
Aggressive Overlays tinted 3rd brake light
S2K Antenna

Got a couple in the mail on their way and many mods planned for the future.

So– I ended up coming up with a solution for the little **** instead of buying the whole new cage. I took a little screw and put it through a little plastic housing with a washer on the end:

And then drilled a hole in the cage, making sure not drill into anything on the other side (Top right):

After some weird tool maneuvering to get the washer tightened properly, I took the rubber casing of the plastic peg that broke and simple slipped it onto the end of my "new" makeshift ****:

After putting it all back together, it worked like a charm.

I also took this opportunity to install the bushings that I hadn't before and also put in a new shift boot. Here's a shot of the finished product:

I'll keep this thread open for informational purposes.
