Spun Rod Bearings 05 tC *Tick of Death*
i had the same problem. my car had a bad tickin noise. it actially happed twice. The first time they came with the same b.s. They said if it not cover it you. blah blah blah. So they ask me for oil changes. so i went to a local shop and ask them for reciept and took to them and that was about it. They fix it. They said it was a rod. Then 10k later it happen again. I think they didnt do all they said they did. The Second time around they didnt ask for nothin i got my car tow to the dealer and two days later they called me to go get the rental. They said they order a new engine and that it was going to take like a week. so they gave me a 08 XB. So far no problem. The dealer always try to pin on somebody else so that they dont fix it. I also had a CAI but i changed it out before it went to the dealer.
So I didn't hear any updates from my Toyota tech regarding my car now, since it has now been a few days. I called Toyota and they told me he went on vacation until Monday and that they will not work on my car until he returns since it's his assigned "case". They have not given me a rental car and I work fulltime... it isn't very easy for me to get around to and from work everyday... Since they haven't torn down the motor to find out if they will cover it under warranty or not I can't even get the courtesy rental car from them either so I guess I am a sitting duck until Mon/Tues.
Well I believe there is some old saying that would answer this in a quicker way. but something tells me that I should be nice to them atleast until they give me their decision on whether THEY or I will be paying the 15K for the motor install.
I was quoting another users thread, I believe it was Stu_Gotti 's 33 page thread about this exact same case happening to him. They quoted him 16K, 13K for the motor, 3K in labor charges. Just crazy... haha.
UPDATE*
The master tech called me and said he finished ripping apart the motor. He found the 2 & 3 rod's bearings were spun, which lead to scoring on those cylinders bla bla. They submitted the report to Toyota corporate and I am awaiting their decision on if it's going to be covered by them or not. They requested just a short block replacement but said they may do the whole motor. I am assuming I should fight for an entire motor rather than just the shortblock? reasoning for when I talk to them if they decide on just the shortblock?

47K Miles. So past the 36K mark but still under the 60K powertrain which would include this type of repair.
last night they didn't have an answer for me again. Toyota said "we will call you first thing in the morning with our answer". So now I wait.

*UPDATE* 3/12
So... Good and Bad News.... Good News. Toyota has decided to cover all the repairs which will not cost me a dime... Bad News. They are not replacing the entire motor OR the short block... They are simply going to "repair" the internals. Which means a new crankshaft and rod bearings, since they don't really see "damage" caused to the other parts yet.
I am not a guru when it comes to the internals of a motor but from what others have posted previously it seems like this is not good news to me. But I guess I can't really change the outcome.

Another *UPDATE*
I just returned from Toyota and checked out my ripped apart block. The bearings did not look bad at all. They were just starting to thin. There was very slight scoring on the crankshaft journals and no damage anywhere else caused yet from what I could see. I guess I will just hope for the best. Sad part is. 2 Weeks is the ETA on this repair.
Although I did get a rental car finally, a brand new Dodge Caliber with about 1500 miles on it. Can't complain since the 2 people in front of me in line got bright yellow Chevy AVEO's.
