Default tC Prep and Build Components for Turbo - What's needed

Well, j2m2l3 PM'ed me and asked this question that along with myself, I'm sure others may have had been getting. He suggested starting a thread about the Stage 1 turbo and what components are needed for getting the tC ready for any kind of boost...

From the kits - IMO, a few things are a bare minimum and need to be done before the kit shows up. If you have any engine bay mods, let the supplier know this when you order. Not all aftermarket pieces play nice together.

First thing is....read over the instructions before the kit even shows up if you can and note the misc. parts needed. If there is any questions...ask. If it looks Greek to you, hire someone else to do it.

Second, make sure you allow 2 days for comfort of install. When your kit shows up...check each item and make sure it's there and good shape. Start on a Saturday morning knowing the parts store is open the next few days. If you get in a hurry...your hosed.

Third, make sure you have the proper tools to do what you read. I can say the snap ring pliers better be a good "large" set. For Pete sake..use jack stands if using a floor jack.

Fourth, have someone to help. If they know more than you...great. If not, understand you are the brains. If this makes you uncomfortable....hire someone else to do it.

Fifth, Do not short cut things. Plan ahead every step of the process. If you know your doing this, install a boost gauge a few weeks before. Don't pile everything up at once. To much to troubleshoot.

Make a check list as you go. When you're done....check everything again. Leaving some of these things undone can make you go buy another engine block.

This is a list of what will probably benefit before and after installation.

A boost gauge is a must before installation.
Start running Premium gas a few tanks before hand.
Change oil to Full Synthetic at time of install
Change spark plugs to one step colder
Toyota gasket maker (grey) for oil pan and fittings
Vacuum "T"s (Vacuum leaks have to be none)
If you are changing exhaust gaskets - get one
If you are changing downpipe donut gasket..get one
If you are coating your manifold and pipe..allow 2 to 3 weeks for this.

On ZPI kit's, make sure you put the downpipe donut gasket AROUND the turbo down pipe. This will require you to hone out the donut a little...but it will fit.

IMO, these are also ideal, but maybe not necessary.

Wideband AFR gauge
EGT Gauge
Oil Pressure Gauge
Manifold coating for heat
Vacuum distribution block
e-Manage harness instead of cutting wires
Clutch Upgrade (manual)
E.S.K Upgrade (Auto - not verified yet)

Please add items as everyone sees fit. I just threw this out for one thread.

In the instructions it says to remove the center cartridge by removing some 10mm nut and bolt. What do I unscrew to slide out the cartridge? Basically how do I get to second pin?

Good job sciondad

Also, for the guys that want to know more about boosting a car. here is a good site. it covers a lot of the basic stuff and is pretty extensive. although some of the info is about boosting a Integra, the general info will be helpful to those who would like to know more about turbos.

Nice link. It mentions that lightened flywheel's might not be good for turbo applications.

The link isn't about tC's or even Toyotas so how do u think a lightened flywheel like a Fidanza would act with our turbo'ed cars?
