tC rpm at 60mph
#8
I wouldn't say the auto is worse... Though I have the 5 speed... The auto has a longer 4th gear which is why it's rated for 1mpg higher than the manual. I'd guess the auto is slightly lower in rpms than the manual at 60mph.

the rpms in 5th at highway speeds are higher in the 5spd, in my old auto i would be at 3k going close to 70, now going 70 its basically 3.5k, doesnt make any sense at all to me.only 2.5k rpms more to go and we redline our last gear, sweet

My brother had a 1990 Corvette that was a 6 speed, but the ratios weren't that short... what would happen when you shifted to 6th at 75 mph was the revs would drop to 1500. Now THAT was sweet. A "true" overdrive gear.
I had a 2000 Audi S4 that was a 6 speed, and i was rowing through gears all the damn time. Really short ratios and little difference from gear to gear. And 6th gear at 75 mph was like 3200 rpm for that V6. I was so disappointed.
Sometimes I wish my Miata and the tC would have a sixth gear, but leave the other 5 gear ratios the same.... the Miata rolls near 4000 rpm in 5th at 75mph and the tC well over 3000. It would be great to have a 6th gear for these cars that would take the revs way down at that speed.

IMO, it's the way it is for a reason, and I appreciate Scion for the gearbox on the tC. I used to believe this-and-that should be changed on the tC, but why bother. Pay more for a different car.
It's an economical sports car; neither strictly an economy car, nor a sports car.

Not all 6-speeds are like this. Ex. a new Corvette or the 04-06 GTO. 1st gear tops out at 60 mph (takes the tc three grears to get to that speed).
Why do people worry about rpm speed at hwy speeds? Your throttle position plays a bigger role in your gas mileage than rpms. My bro's JDM b16 tranny in his Civic revs even higher than the tC. At 70 its at 4.5k rpms and he can still get over 30 mpg.

yeah a jdm b16 also revs out to 8000+ rpm's. which is halfway up the rpm track for him.
but when teh rpm's are that high going about 75, around 4k, 2k short of the final gear redline, it does affect the mileage. it seems as if that if they just added on a 6th gear to the tranny the way it is now without changing the ratio's it would be sufficient

Not really. Since auto have longer gear ratios, at 2500rpm is about 60mph, I think. I'm definitely sure that manuals have a slightly higher rpm.
That's why tC is one of those exceptions where you get more EPA estimated rating MPG in an auto.
