Default Transmission grinding...

Hey all,

Just wanted to mention that I am new to the world of Scion, just picked up a 2009 TC. So far I love it except that I only have 450 miles and the 2nd and 3rd gears grind. I searched any possible forum and came across this topic a few times but nothing I found really shows the cause or solution. I live in Jersey and it has been really cold lately but all the other gears are as smooth as butter. Shifting into 2nd and 3rd (mainly 2nd) has been the problem. Is this something that goes away or should I pretty much take it to the dealer?

Thanks all.

I had a similar problem but it was when I down shifted from 4th to 3rd above 50 mph. Never figured out what it was though.

Does it get any better when the car warms up? I know I have this problem when it is really cold. I get a grinding feel going from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, but after the car warms up it goes away. It has been like that since I have had the car.

Hey DJ,

That is exactly what is happening. After it warms up it seems it does go away and if anything it's a slight grind. I just don't want to ruin anything if this keeps up. I definitely make sure the clutch is all the way in and still get this issue. I still have to go back to the dealer to pick up my plates so I'll definitely let them know about it as well. As I mentioned I just don't want to ruin anything.

Thanks.

No problem,

Well I have a 08 with 23000 miles and I haven't had a problem and mine does it. I haven't really found a solution to help, sometimes shifting slower helps but usually it just needs to warm up. It scared me when it first got cold and started doing it but I think it is a pretty common thing for the tC. But I would just ask and see what they say.

I have this issue, but after 55,000 miles it hasn't gone away, and has gotten a little worse. Whenever I took it in under warranty, they were never able to duplicate though.

guess i aint the only one then haha, i got my 09 the day i graduated high school :D, then when winter hit around ( i live in vegas so what ever weather it is it too much of it haha ) i noticed that the gears started grinding mostly from 1st to 2nd and i think sometimes 3rd, no matter how much i try not to, then when warmed up, goes away, i guess it isnt a real big issue

nope it happens to me also - when its VERY cold if ou shift too fast it does it. I have gotten into the habbit of shifing slow in 1st to 2nd gear till the car is over 130deg. I dont even put my car into gear before 100deg and it doesnt fully heat up till 173deg

like people have been saying, its probably just cuz the gears and the fluid is cold and not lubricating its best. when it warms up, everything should be good but if youre annoyed you can use what ppl recommend (redline mt90). changing fluids is a hassle...at least to me it is

welcome to my world as well. i grind going into either 2nd or 3rd, mostly 2nd. took it to the dealer, they blamed the "noise" on my CAI hitting my frame whenever the car shifted. made no sense. dealers never do though.

by the way mine is an 07 with 20,623 miles on the ODO. has been doing it for the past 9K miles now.

^^this is partly why I never went to the dealer about it, because by the time I would get there it would be warmed up and wouldn't grind any.
