Default Turbo Or 5-Speed

Okey I Thought I Was Going To Swap My Tranny Out To A 5-Speed But I Heard That Kills Your Resale Value. So I Was Like Maybe Power First? I Like My Car I Don't Want To Sell Or Trade It. So My Question Is Should I Turbo My Car Or Go With The 5-Speed Swap? I'm Willing To Spend About 5k For Either So If Anyone Has Any Input Just Help Me Out

well...either one isn't going to help your resale value at all. both will hurt it period.

but there isn't much point to either.

you spend the money on a turbo, but the performance gains are tiny because the auto tranny can't take that much power, and is slow on the shifting action.

you spend the money on a transmission swap and while you'll have the transmission to handle more power (with an upgraded clutch), the car will only have stock whp figures and still be slow...

my opinion is that both would be a rather big waste of money separately. if you were going to do both at once, then i'd say it was worth it from personal preference perspective.

but to only do one would be a bit of a waste. i'd just save up and buy a better car down the road with more power and a manual transmission.

several reasons:

1. parents buy the car, they don't want them street racing so they buy them an auto.

2. car is shared between 2 or more drivers and one of the driver's can't operate a stick shift.

3. in 2005, when new, the tC was very hard to come by at the dealerships (let alone an RS) so you were either restricted to what the dealership got, or had to wait for the one you wanted.

spend the money on other things like

- spend the money on the tC in other areas (suspension, wheels, interior, etc..) if you aren't planning on trading the car in I wouldn't worry about resale value..even if you were it's easy to return back to stock as long as you hold onto the parts...but going back to stock from a turbo and ESPECIALLY a trans swap isn't as simple...

- buy a project car that is already a manual and build that up. You can find plenty of cars for well under $3k to dump the extra $2k into and make it a pretty fast/fun to drive weekend toy

- just save the money for things like school, vacation, other hobbies, future invesments etc...

these are just my opinion of course but they are also some things to think about and other ways to spend that money

A 5 speed TC puts down ~150whp and an auto ~125whp. Supposedly the AT can handle up to 250whp. Even if you only put down 200whp with a turbo auto, which do you think would be faster and more fun to drive? As for resale, you can pull the turbo parts off and sell them. Not so easy to swap the tranny back in.

just turbo it. do it right and your faster than a lot of turbo 5 speeds because most people dont know how to drive. Then bracket race it.

Killed it haaa they didnt want me street racing.... so I drove my moms MR2 which now shes giving me in the spring but I may sell the tc now and buy a volvo s60 R or an e46 M3 since thats what I originally was doing. Or just sell this and put money in the MR2 since that things already 5 speed but still n/a and you can do a motor swap for like 3k and get over 200hp. I guess I have some thinking to do but I know I'm not going to turbo it if anything I'd swap thetranny in it just to rip around on. Thanks Fella's.

I think the first thing you should do is figure out what you really want to do with the car. As posted above you are wanting to go in so many different directions and this is making it even harder to make your mind up.

Dude I love my A/T tC....One of the most fun things I have done to the car, including coilovers and sways. It's a lot of fun, and it wasn't crazy hard to do.

Save your money that you would use to swap tranny's and buy a turbo system.

Once you have that saved, trade the car in and use the money for the tranny and turbo for a car that already has the power you want or can get, i.e. WRX Cobb Stage 2.

/thread.
