What does the mid & S-pipe really do???
I have stock headers but i have a TDR axleback exhaust and i was wondering what an aftermarket mid- pipe and s-pipe would do??? does it add HP or sound at all? is it worth the investment?
i got injen intake megan 2.25 downpipe, midpipe and trd exhaust. i like the sound, it seems to breath nicer at higher rpm, i got no dyno for this but i can say not one civic has got me if it counts. we can race to see if it makes a differance in performance, im in sd north county
Getting a larger diameter s-pipe and mid-pipe opens up the airways so your car can breath a little better. Your axel-back is only opening up the rear section of the exaust, by getting headers, s-pipe, mid-pipe your opening up the rest. So yes I do believe it is worth it getting the rest of the exhaust to do the job properly.
The midpipe & s-pipe are not worth replacing unless you are going forced induction.
The most restrictive parts of the stock tC exhaust are the exhaust manifold and muffler. As you have already replaced the muffler with your TRD you should consider replacing the exhaust manifold with a header if you are looking for more peak power. Dynos show a gain of at least 7whp depending on the brand of header.
After header and axleback you have maxed out your HP gains on a N/A tC. You will gain very little by replacing the midpipe or s-pipe. The s-pipe, which usually runs $150-200, might gain 1-2whp which is equivalent to a dyno error and is a very poor bang-for-the-buck.

the whole setup works very nice. the gains are real noticeable. IMO get rid of the trd if you change the rest of the pipes. i had my trd on for a while with the setup you want to do and it didnt sound very good but i changed my axleback and now it sounds better and was def. the finishing touch on the exhuast

Yes, this has been discussed before. But you're right, they do look restrictive, and to a certain extent they are. But you have to remember we're only talking about a 160bhp Camry 4-banger. At that little power and exhaust cfm flow, the midpipe and s-pipe are not creating that much backpressure.
I have read posts where replacing the midpipe on n/a tC made no power difference, and it shouldn't. The midpipe is just under 2.5" (60mm) which is wider than it needs to be, so the cat is much less restrictive than if Toyo had used 2.25"/55mm (which is actually the ideal exhaust pipe size for this motor). The resonator takes nothing from power.
The s-pipe has several funky bends, and it actually necks down to 2" i.d. just before the midpipe, but it's still just an empty pipe. Replacing it and/or the midpipe may make the car sound louder but won't add any significant HP.
If you bolt-on a turbo it makes sense to replace the entire exhaust to at least 2.5". But for n/a, after putting on header + axleback, your power $$ are better spent on intake, fuel management & tuning.

WORD! I would love to slap on a turbo but the bank loves their money...so thats out of the picture...for now! you say you have the mid and s pipe on and that it sounds good...Does it sound "raspy"? Im not too sure i really want it if it makes it sound all rice-rockety...???? I like the sound of the TRD now ...I kinda want the same sort of sound just louder.. even if it doesnt add HP.
yeah seriously folks use the search. Mid life is right, without forced induction you're waisting your time and money. Save those pennies and get yourself one of these!
