What Gear?
I have a 08 with a 5 speed, I have to start out all the time in 2nd gear as 1st gear revs so high.
Does anyone else do this?

I use first but the ratio is ridiculously low. Second and fifth are also too low for my preference. When my wife drives it, she shifts out of first so fast if you weren't watching you would think she started in second.
You would have to change the gear stacks or FD ratio (ring and shaft). I'm not real familiar with the Toyota manuals but on our Nissan's we find V6 car 6 speeds for the higher gear ratios that match our turbo 4 cyl cars better and swap the gear stacks and FD. It's a lot of work but worth it in the end.
For tCs, you can use the Camry e351 trans for taller gears. Direct swap with no modifications needed. Just bolt on and go. It's the same trans but with a taller final drive and taller individual gear ratios.
I took the time to read the entire "Anyone running the camry transmission" thread:

Just a couple questions on a swap like this:
1) With a NA engine, is there any benefit of also doing the Quaife/TRD LSD install?
Wikipedia has this info on the E351

3) Is the ratio of engine revs:wheel revs determined by multiplying the chosen gear ratio X the final drive ratio?

I did the e351 with LSD before I installed the turbo, so it was just an intake and 4-1 header. I will say that since the N/A engine doesn't make much power, you do loose a little in the acceleration department due to the taller ratios, but you gain back some mpg. I always found it difficult to accelerate quickly in the wet with the open diff. That was greatly improved with the LSD, which is a nice benefit for a daily driver if you see that kind of weather. Also, an even better help in the snow. I think it's worth it, and if you think about it, a similarly powered Nissan Sentra SE-R from that era came with a similar helical lsd unit from the factory.
