Default 05-06 2az short block for turbo?

Hi all, I’ve got 2 TCs, an 09 which I just recently went turbo with, and an 06 that I recently picked up as a daily. The 06 one has started leaking tons of coolant from the bottom of the intake manifold, and everywhere I read says that it’s because the 05-06 2az has shorter head bolts, and they strip out and fail. I was already looking into buying a spare motor for my turbo car, to slowly build for power, and I was curious if I could put an 07+ short block in my 06 TC, and use the old 06 motor and drill and tap it to use bigger head bolts, and then put it in my boosted 09. Not sure if the retapped holes can hold as much power as the stock 07+ ones do, or if there’s other differences between the two blocks that would make me want an 07+ for turbo applications. Thanks

Convert to studs. Bolts wear out threads in block and causes all sorts of issues.

Gotcha, so if I convert my 06 block to studs and put it in my boosted 09 will it be able to handle around 350whp?

No guarantees...what else are you doing with the short block?

Race main and rod bearings, forged con rods, lower comp pistons, full rebuild. Whatever it needs in order to be bulletproof

Sounds pretty solid...the only thing I would check is to see if you can 'upsize' the head studs if you're going to run a ton of boost. Don't know what size they are currently but, as an example, see if you can get it re-sized to go from a 12mm to a 13 or 14mm stud.

Looks like they're going to be re-sizing the head bolt bores anyway but I'd see how big I could take them.

Awesome. Thanks for the advice!
