Default Another s/c down...

I suppose there's some irony here and it serves me right after being such a strong advocate on this site for the supercharger, that I am now on here to let you guys know mine is failing as well.

Took my car in today to have a piece in the dash replaced to fix a rattle (surprise). While in there, they noticed my s/c making an odd noise and sure enough, the bearings in the shaft are failing.

Mine is an 06 tC, with 20,000 miles on it. I have 14,000 on the s/c. I've had no oil leaks, broken brackets, etc. I have no other engine mods (and boy am I thankful for that now!). I had the s/c installed at the dealer.

Scion of Lake City (Seattle) is being very helpful and have talked to Toyota and word is they are sending a replacement to the dealer now, all covered under warranty. Somehow I won't breathe easy about that until after it's all said and done. But I know Lake City will help me out as long as Toyota/TRD cooperate.

damn man sorry to hear that, what kind of noises is it making. Mines sounds kinda weird when i first start it until the oil warms up but it has sounded like that pretty much since i bought it. Maybe i should make a video to see if it sounds similar to yours.

what's almost gone? your BASIC warranty for 30,000 mi? Isn't the powertrain warranty of 60,000 mi the important one?

The BUMPER-TO-BUMPER warranty is 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty

The POWERTRAIN warranty, which the TRD supercharger installed at A DEALER is part of, is the 5 year, 60,000 mile warranty. You got a wayyyyys to go bro LOL

No kidding. Thats freakin great. Now I really dont care what noises i hear from my s/c. If my mounts break again ill get the new design. TRD are fools for making us keep the ones we have. Im getting my lsd/flywheel/clutch done at the dealer. I go back to the place where I had my s/c installed at.

Here's the link to a s/c with bad bearing, we should really sticky this thing for future people asking about what it sounds like. Here it is orginially posted by ZerO when I first blew my bearing and was trying to describe it:

Wow though.... 14k miles on the s/c and now it failes!!! This is a little bit of a first, usually they go after 3k or so. I'm really sorry to hear about you car.

Thanks guys.

As for the sound, it's hard to say. I'll be honest in that I didn't notice a difference. It's always been noisy. When I pulled up to the service drive, my service advisor walked up to the car, gave me a funny look, then asked me to pop the hood. I told her it always sounds like that. She said she wanted the tech to look at it. I really appreciate that she was able to notice the difference. It's hard when I don't have another one to compare it to, whereas she does. So I owe her a big thanks for being so observant.

And by the way, mine sounds nothing like that video clip. It just rattles a little bit.

I'll keep you posted.

Yep powertrain warranty is all that matters with the supercharger add-on as long as it was installed by a dealer.

Yeah, as long as you had your s/c installed by a dealer, your s/c is covered for the remainder of your powertrain warranty (5/60).

At first they were a little confused, thinking it was only a year. I showed them my warranty certificate and they were fine with it. Though either way I'm covered because I had the s/c installed one year ago TOMORROW. Happy s/c anniversary...

We need to start a thread that has links to all of the superchargers going down that have zero mods.

Everyone (TRD) was so quick to blame pulleys, and BPVS, headers, intakes, yet the last 5 or so blown superchargers were completely stock.

Im glad your is being handled properly!!

The only logical ..."maybe" problem w/ the s/c is an aftermarket header. Because you are removing the heat shield that might be an issue. I have mine jethot coated and have had zero issues! The pulley isnt an issue. The blower is designed for more psi then what anybody (99% of the people) are throwing at it. The BPV ..ha. ....thats no issue.

What people have to know is that there is a certain % of failure rates. That is why there is a warranty ...that is why life is life. I thought the warranty was 36k but was just informed its 60k ...thats a heck of a warranty. Im actually glad I bought the s/c instead of a turbo because 60k is sweet on a performance item. I still will have a few more years warranty on the s/c w/o question.

haha must be nice to have a few years left on your warranty... i just passed the 60k point on the car.... engine is a different story anywho yes jwaggz is correct about the heat shield, not that TRD was being cheap in their seal selections its just that they designed the kit around certain temps and and when you excede those temps you raise the chances... but yeah about that BPV

nomatter how you look at it ...heat is always bad. ...unless you are talking about heating up your car in the winter. All scion had to do was come out with staged upgrades from the dealer and people would spend the wasted price jumps just to keep the warranty. ...simple as that. I rather have toyota do the R&D ....do a stage 1,2 and 3 ....and keep my warranty.

I think it is a great idea to sticky this... particularly those of us who have had SC issues / replacements who have not modded the SC.

That is EXACTLY how my SC sounded one morning and I immediately brought it to the dealer (Thompson Toyota) who were totally standup about the SC and replaced it in one day.

It would probably be useful to TRD/Toyota too! They should note that those who would like to retain their warranty and have played by the rules would also probably pay for a smaller pulley made by TRD.... even at a price. Just so we can keep our warranty.

If GM can offfer it for the Cobalt, then Toyota can without blinking.

I think it would be a great idea for those who want a s/c to seriously consider getting a turbo for a little bit more unless they are willing to handle the possible problems.
