Default engine has some rod knock

sadly i believe i have a bad rod/bearing or something of that sort because im hearing a distinct rod knocking sound from my engine, its not that loud but its noticeable. was hoping someone could tell me what my options were ie: new engine, rebuild this one, etc.... also what kind of prices would i be looking at for those?

oh yeah i forgot to mention im probly gonna be taking the turbo kit off the car soon and selling it so that might get rid of the rebuilding the engine option.

you should check the valves on it. also try checking the time it might be a little off. well i suggest you just try fixing it it would be worth then just buying a whole new engine.

Yeah I'd do all the engine test to know what you have on your hands before you go any further.

A compression test is not going to tell you if a rod is knocking.

First of all... what does it sound like? Does it sound like it matches engine speed, or half engine speed? This will tell you some about whether it is top end or bottom end. Does it change with engine speed? If you slowly rev it up to about 3500 rpm and back off the throttle, does it make it sound worse? Is it a ticking, a knocking, etc?

If you really think you have a rod knocking, as mentioned, pull the oil pan. You may or may not find metal easilly, depending on how bad it is. However, once the pan is pulled you can also check play in the bearings and go from there.

i would go to a toyota dealer.. (different from the dealership you bought the car) and just ask a mechanic to listen.

i wouldn't even think about taking the car for mechanical issues they are bunch of retards plus they try charging you 100 bucks an hour so if there go to the restroom you are paying them to take a dump. try going to someone you know for a honest opinion.

I know when i put headers on my car as soon as i started it up i had a knocking sound almost like a lifter was hitting my valve cover or something. I had stripped out a stud and thought maybe it fell into my cylinder. Im in the airforce and we have a boroscope small camera i stuck it down in there and looked around and saw nothing. I never did figure out the problem it just went away. It went with engine speed and was not constant sometimes all the time, sometimes in and out. It was really werid but after it went a way did a compression test and everything was good. I read somewere on here that the difference in back pressure could cause a lifter to "float", thats what it said so dont take my word on it.

Could be the timing chain guides... Check to make sure there is tension on the chain... I have seen 2 tC's with broken guides that ran fine with good vac but had a rattling that sounded like it was coming from the head.

wow, you haven't met any good technicians then.

And most technicians are on flat rate (i.e. they get paid however much it costs to do the job. If the job pays 1 hour and they do it in 5, they only get paid for that 1 hour. So if they were taking a dump for 4 hours, they don't get paid.)

Sorry for the off-topic, but I am a technician and would like to think that I am not a "grease monkey/retarded".
