Ya my buddy with a STi has a 3.5" turbo-back and his shoots flames. They rise up above his trunk they're so big.

That IS where the problem is. The 3 inch diameter is allowing the exhaust gases to cool to much. Hence loss of tQ numbers for any of the cars with 350 and below whp. Which is pretty much 90% of the cars on here.

1/4 mile simulation. Some dyno's have it.

hmmm....never heard of it, but I'll take your word for it.

Oh, and aen, that topic has been discussed in lenght before. a log style mani is usually shorter so allows for quicker spooling, but the unequal lenght runners caues turbulance, wheras an EL mani (usually longer runners) have a slightly slower spool but the equal lengh runner allow for smooth deliver of air flow to the turbine allowing for a smoother HP/Tq curve and ultimatley, more power, and i beleive HP builds more exponentially then TQ, which is why a good flowing EL mani will produce more HP then TQ after a certain PSI level.

i dunno about you but i do recall going at this already, hence the log manifold and big turbo i have. =|

60-1 turbo, 70 trim. benifit from a 3 inch exhaust?

i dont know how people can say you lose trq...i mean the dynos show that you gain 7 foot lbs as far as i saw

Link? The dyno I saw showed a significantly lower tQ number compared to other tC's running the same boost and HP #'s, but having a 2.5 inch exhaust instead.

Yeah, aen, your larger turbo is compensating for your log mani, but untill we get that dynoed, we won't see exactly where power comes on and what not. And if you switched to an EL mani, you would get more, smoother power.

sciontcnj: we aerent saying that you LOSE tq, you just build more HP then tq. the stock tc motor has a little more tq then hp...turbos with log manis on our motors have higher tq then hp, and those with el manis (with enough psi) have higher hp then tq.

What does any of this have to do with flames out the exhaust?

Hmm, well contrary to the generalizations made by a few people I am still getting more torque than HP on both an equal length manifold and 3 inch exhaust equipped car. On top of that it is a relatively large turbo (bigger than most Scion guys run) which in theory should also make less torque and more HP but yet it doesn't. I think it is a difficult thing to generalize these assumptions floating around on this thread regarding exhausts and manifolds. It certainly has gotten off topic though.

3 inch exhaust, EQ manifold, GT37 turbo and I have 340whp and 346wtq....


3 inch FTW


I pop flames too. If you watch my youtube video you can hear it pop while shifting in the 60-100 run.


My brother shoots flames out of the QTP cutout which looks hot as hell at night

a lot of turbo cars flame on shifts cause they are alittle rich, evo's are really bad for it since they are pig rich from the factory, but running 10psi u probably have the horsepower to run at least a 2.75-3.0" exhaust

OK so like he said torque moves based on spool characteristics.... so logical deduction says if 3'' allows for spool up more easily then torque peak may move around i.e. come on earlier.... so not less torque but peak torque at a different point

You don't have to be turboed though to shoot flames. N/A vehicles can do it as well.
