Default going boost in california a good idea?

I want to go boost! but i live in california and i know they have all the crazy CARB rules. But i know people have boosted tC's in cali... so what do i do? do they have any carb legal kits? i just dont feel like gettin pulled over and gettin my car impounded when they look under the hood. is there any way getting around that?

sorry. only CARB legal forced induction you can get in cali is the discontinued TRD supercharger. AFAIK, there are not carb legal turbo kits, dezod and world racing worked on it, but they're yet to get approval.

as for the people who do, either they bribe the state refs, don't get pulled over, or live in areas with minimal enforcement from what i can tell.

one solution for you could be a rear mount turbo kit since it would be fairly well hidden since the engine would look nearly stock under the hood and the cops would have to look under the car to see it.

Or get a carb legal sticker, and put it over everything, then try and pull it off as if it's all carb legal.

that wouldn't work. all the CARB stickers have part numbers on them right? so they just pull them up and thus thusly...you get arrested for presenting false documentation to a police officer. and get raped in prison upon conviction.

best way to get boosted in cali...probably buy a factory turbocharged car.

Yeah, best thing to do would be move or take the risk.

If you risk it, keep all your stock parts because if you get caught, you have to go to the state ref and show that it is back to stock and they are pretty thorough about checking your stuff.

It also depends on where you live. Up here in northern California it used to be really bad a few years ago to the point where they would have checks on certain days, now that has been gone. The only recent time I saw it like that was two years ago in Stockton some kids were street racing and one of them was killed and it was major crackdown in Stockton.

Like drax said, either buy a factory turbocharged car, or build a project car that a company makes a carb legal turbo for (I'm certain Greddy makes a carb legal kit for certain hondas and most likely other brands).

All of our guys here at WORLD have been driving aftermarket boosted cars here in Cali for years now...never once had a problem.

IMO...cops look for people causing trouble & 99% of the time when a modifcation ticket is written it's because you got busted street racing or breaking some other law.

How do all of you get around the smog testing if it's not CARB approved?

Smog testing is not required in CA until the 6th year of registration (thanks tina) so until the car is 6 years old this isnt a problem you have to worry about.

Every 2nd year from the 6th. So, 6th, 8th, 10th registration years.

move out of cali OR leave your car stock looking and when you get your turbo get a 2.5" exhaust instead of a 3" so it won't be too loud. don't drive like an idiot nor rev your car to hear the bov or show it off, also keep the lower grill to hide the intercooler so cops won't be able to see it and recirculate the bov if possible.

Me too, but my 5th year registration did not ask me for a smog check this year, so I guess it is the 6th year now, as for smog test goes, there's a guy out here who charges $150 for passing any car, its risky for him thou cause if he gets caught he looses his license, it might be hard to find one in your area so good luck.

im not sure how all of this works but
lets say you get pulled over for speeding and you have a turbo
obviously the cop can see it when you pop your hood but you passed smog by paying off the guy
does that make a difference that you passed? wont it still not be carb legal?
