high response/low boost turbo application (help)
hello all you forced induction people... i am seriously considering coming over to the dark side from the N/A camp. i am shopping turbo sizes and dont have any idea where to start... i had a turbo civic when i was 20 and i blew it up and swiftly went back to N/A tuning. i am looking for a quick responding turbo that is low boost (not over 8 psi not looking for BIG power just MORE power). this is for a daily driven/ weekend auto X tC. so i want something that is gonna get me to peak boost quick but still be able to run up to redline with out grenading the turbo. i would also like my motor to last to 200,000 miles. if this is too tall of an order let me know. right now the block is about the only remaining stock piece in the car and it has 93k on it. it runs like a raped ape, doesnt smoke, and gets good compression across the board. also if anyone in the PNW area has a turbo tC i would like to take a look at it so i can get some measurements. thanks in advance everyone.
lag is what makes a turbo great even if it has it its only for a moment i run a 3076r and it spools very fast and wont run out of leg lol as far as going 200000 this is a tall order and you have 93k on it already i would make sure you have some money to rebuild if stuff hits the fan
less than 3K you'll be in full boost with these, good for low boost application.. ideal for 1.8-3.0 L displacement
again i dont know a whole heck of a lot about turbos... its very humbling. i know the principle and how to install them. i have just never worked with enough of them to get really comfortable with sizes and applications and tuning and what not.
the turbo will only build boost when you press on the throttle quick and to stay on boost your should give a good amount of throttle otherwise the boost will eventually go away and then you will be back on cruising.. you might see some low boost on this turbo even on daily driving
3-4 mins of redline driving, is that an autocross? the turbo will but question is how bout your motor? with proper maintenance, upgrades, tune you should be good

i say 3-4 minutes because i make 3-4 passes normally around 45 seconds a pop so im just figuring on a buffer. the motor is good... it has been seeing 2700 mile royal purple oil changes since i first got it. and i am not about to drive around a turbo on some crappy out the box tune... and i am sure that one day a bottom end rebuild is in the works but havent gotten there yet...
Downhill,
These recommendations are all great - GT28 turbos are really quick spooling and are very efficient - only downside is they're costly ($1100+)
KKK turbos are good too.. so are IHI but the only issue with these are that they have a different footprint so you would have to change manifolds if you ever wanted to switch over to a Garret type turbo.
I would personally recommend a T3 Super 60 for what you want. As long as you get a .48 AR exhaust housing and keep the exhaust wheel a Stage 2 or lower, it should spool really quick. The T3 footprint is very common so if you ever feel the need to step up to a bigger turbo (T04E or even the GT3076) it will be much easier to do so. You can find a T3 Super 60 for about $600 new.

got to pay to play the the gt series arent cheap but you get what you pay for in the end
Cory,
I know everyone here is so hyped up about GT turbos.. and yes they are great turbos but really for some it's not worth the money. If he wants to invest $1100+ on a turbo alone - then a GT would be a good choice.. or any Borg Warner..
I'm just giving him an option that will be quick spooling, make more power than a Mitsu 16g, and still very affordable.. and also provides a better upgrade path with the T3 footing. If he gets a GT28, it will most likely be a T25 footing and he'll have to consider the GT3071 as an upgrade instead of the "bigger" GT3076.

Yes there are many variations of every turbo.. but I'm talking about off the shelf. GT28 turbos have T2 footings from Garrett.
Downhill,
You should do more research on your own - and take compressor maps of all possible turbos you may want. Plot out your points and see which will be best for you. People will all put in their opinions on what they think is best, but only you will know what's best because usually our budgets are what dictate which route we go.
