Default Installing your Turbo Kit 101

Ok, as my TT bro's know, I ordered my kit from Todd already.

Im psyched about the whole thing, but I have been contemplating whether or not I should take it to a performance shop/ or some friends to have them install it for me.

Now Im pretty good with a ratchet under the hood and all, but I have 0 experience with Turbo Systems.

Im really confused about where to run the vacuum lines, and how to tap into them, and where to tap into them.

Im also a bit shady on the whole oil line thing, and how to install gauges.

Id love to save 700 bucks and do it myself, but I need some knowledge before I even attempt it, as I dont want to screw anything up.

help!

vacuum lines should be least of your concern.. thats easy when you figured it out.

the hard part you guys may look into are

1. removing the oil pan-- so PITA
2. drilling the crashbar to mount the intercooler-- those are tough and we have to go through 2 drill bits for that
3 good luck on mounting the HKS bov-- haha

i had it done in a shop since i live in an apt and have no place to do it.. 2 of my friends who were gonna help me backed out when they saw the kit haha so i lost 700 for the install but i was there the whole time and helped coz i knew the car better and they havent done any scion yet

the c clip is a lil hard so you will need a good snap ring pliers... its just tight to get into.. but that only for the hks, i think tial or greddy just use a v band or something

The ring for the BOV mounting is tough.

Removing the oil pan and welding the oil return on is tough.

I would tell anybody doing their own turbo install to use a pretapped oil pan .... getting it off is a bioch ...so atleast once you get it off you can just swap it w/ the pretapped and you can keep moving.

If you guys are installing your own turbos ....how are you getting your cars to a tuner to get tuned? driving them?

If this is your first turbo car and first install isn't it worth spending the $700 and getting the initial install done by someone that knows what they are doing ....then learn about FI by reading on the form (cause just cause you have a turbo on your car ... you need to upkeep things and know what is what).

there are two shops around my house....the first one is 6.2 miles from me. the other is fastlane and its 13 miles away. so i think i can limp it to there or have it towed on a flatbed. Which i may do that (much much safer). another grand for install, crap man i get your point but i feel that if there is anything ill have any problems with, ill have the intelligence to search for or ask questions. But all in all the install is the funnest part, so why am i going to let someone else have all the fun. I have rebuilt a couple of engines(ka24de, 350) and since then i wanted a new challenge, well this is it.

BOV c-ring is a PITA!!!!!
Pan sucked to remove. I still have a scar from that....

Do it yourself. The Vaccum lines are really easy if you got the Vac Block from TT

I would have a shop do it, you really need a lift and the right tools to do it. Also remember with many after market parts it is not just bolt in. Plus if you break anything while installing it can end up being very expensive.

If you want I can have my friend at After Hours Autosports give you a price to install the kit for you, they are on Long Island and there are many people on these boards that had them install turbo kits for them. Plus they can do in house welding for you.

jjos1, are you talking about Ryan?

Yea I already contacted him on ScioNRG, he gave me a pretty decent price also which was nice, he is one of 3 ppl/places, Im looking into.

but just out of curiosity sake, does anyone have pictures or a DIY on vacuum lines and how and where to tap them. and yes my TT kit does come with the Vacuum Block

also, clocking your turbo is a simple as letting the engine crank without any spark plugs in it right? to get oil to the turbo?

^ Yeah Ryan

And clocking your turbo is rotating it to where you want the outlet to point, and you should crank the car a few times to prime the bearings before you start it for the first time. As for the vac lines it is not hard, you want to tap into the vac lines in between the throttle body and evac sensor.

i actually forgot to crank the engine for the first time i turned it on, but shouldnt be a big deal especially on our car where the oil feed is just short and oil gets to the turbo in few secs.. but yeah the concept of turbo installation is pretty simple, its mostly plumbing work for the most part but the actual work sure is a man's job and is challenging.

tc_2ner you want me to post pics of where you tap your vac block? i have it on my thread too

ok here you go

before..

after

Notice that hollow rod where 2 hoses connects to each side, thats where you put the vacuum block.. its just like using the vac block instead of that so you can put barbs for your other vacuum hoses and of course you have to extend the hose to connect them.
