Default Is my turbo'd tC really a hybrid in disguise?

So I got up early this morning and drove from Virginia Beach to just outside Cleveland. A drive I've made a bunch of times before. I run a ZPI kit, with 550's, tuned with blue (tune is about 2 years old). Normally freeway driving I average between 20-25 MPG... That was with quite a few exhaust leaks and such. I just replaced all the gaskets and such on the kit. I filled up at my halfway point, which was 307.7 miles and my car took 8.169 gallons... doing the math, I averaged 37.6 MPG.... I'm perplexed. I topped off before leaving VB, made sure to reset the trip odometer and I drove with the AC on the whole time, cruise on set at 65 majority of the way...

I'm not complaining at all, but dang!

Hot weather helps mileage and you were not empty so the gas that was in the tank was warm and expanded - your next fillup will get you lower mileage more than likely. You could also have lucked out and got some extra gas due to some pumping error. You should get about that mileage at that speed if everything is well tuned.

that is odd jan... I usually get my best mileage on a tank when I fill up in the middle of the night and my tank is almost bone dry. it also varies significantly depending on the exact station I fill up at (presuming it has something to do with the ethanol content)

That's when you get the "Real" good mileage - you are empty and get a tank of cool gas which is more dense thus more BTUs. This gets you more gas out of the ground than on a hot day with warmed up expanded gas, you may end up getting 5% more energy out of the cooled tank of gas because of it being contracted. Just burn it before it expands and leaks out of the tank. Volume wise it is the same when cold but energy wise it has more in it and gets you more mileage. Some day soon there is talk of temperature correcting the pumps in this country then you will see some weird fillups . . . like 15 gallons into a 14 gallon tank when it is cold out . . . the oil company gets paid for that extra gallon of energy from the contracted gas you pump instead of you getting it for free. But it will work the other way too . . . you may only pump 13 gallons on a hot day and be full so you will not be cheated.

If you fill up and drive a few miles then fill up again, the gas that was in the tank expands so it looks like you didn't burn much at all but you really did and eventually you do get the correction to your mileage after you burn the expanded gasoline.

when you are at cruising speed with the a turbo, you are in vacuum, and the turbo itself is atomizing the incoming air so it is burning more efficiently than a regular car at that point.

im actually working at dezod motorsports for the summer and i was told that it depends on the way u drive. if ur nice to the car (not reving it to max rpm's) then it would b like a hybrid. its because ur using the exhaust air to spin the turbine which spins the compressor wheel which then goes into the intercooler and pushes the air back into the throttle body and cycles like that. and if ur pushing ur car to the max then it can b the complete opposite, a gas guzzler.

so to wrap it up it can b if u treat it right.
