Need Help diagnosing problem on TRD SC tC
Hey guys, I have been working with a dealer to try to resolve an issue and have not yet been successful. I was hoping that possibly with some fresh minds and peeps that know more about the system than I do can help me to help the dealer find the problem.
History:
The car is an 06 tC 5-spd that has been S/C'd since about 350 miles. It currently has about 12k on it. The car is also running a TRD exhaust and a forge 007 BPV with the strongest spring in it. First oil change was done at 2,500 miles to Mobile 1 full synthetic 5w-30 and has been using JDM spec oil filters (with metal mesh, purchased for about $20 each from McGeorgeparts.com) since the first oil change. Last change was about 3k ago. All services completed by the dealer using supplied parts.
The incident:
About 10 days ago, I was running from work to get some food. I do beat my car and was getting on it about 75% of WOT. Shift to first was fine, then to 2nd, fine, about 50 mph I shift into third and hear what sounds like a slow tire blowout. Lots of atmospheric venting. The engine shuts off while I am driving. I pull off the road and pop the hood after realizing that it was not a tire blow out. I check all the connections onto the S/C thinking one of them may have come lose but all looks fine.
I restart the engine and am suprized by the amount of white smoke to exit the tail pipe. The car is ideling poorly and not responding well to throttle response. I limp it back to work (at the dealer). It continues to barly run. I leave it running and grab another car to grab the food and come back. The car is still running and will still shoot some black smoke under partial throttle but the throttle response is getting better. I check with my service dept and they ask if I can repeat the problem. I drive the car and cannot. They say not to worry and check in with them later.
Next day I notice a noise coming from the engine. Sounds like a sewing machine. I take it back to service and they advise me that the engine is a quart low though there is no evidence of leaking and the engine passed its pressure check test. I have an idea where the white smoke came from now. They refill a quart (toyota sythetic blend 5w-30) and advise me that it will not adversly mix with the mobile one in the car. Initially the car feels better but the sound is still there.
2 days ago I get with the shop foreman and take him for a ride in the car. I have now learned to be able to make the sound on command. It happens throughout the rpm range but is particularly loud at 3000-3200 rpm. Rigth at 70mph in 5th gear, lovely. He advises me to use they fuel injector cleaner and try another fuel station, recommends Shell.
On a side note, the S/C doesnt make its usual purring sound since this happened. power is still there and all, but I am worried as it all happened all at once. Any suggestions?

My guess is it is the JDM oil filters. There is no JDM parts for the tC seeing it is sold only in America.
Haha, not really sure what is causing the problem. Good luck and I hope you get things worked out.

Sorry, let me clarify the oil filter.
It is the same one that the car ships from the factory with. I went in asking for a TRD one so I could waste a few bucks and they educated me on the lack of value to cost benifit on the TRD filter and recommended this one as it is like the OEM replacement part with the exception of the metal filtration added to it as well. Its also supposed to be high filtration rate too.
I will be having the oil changed tomarrow to see if that helps as the fuel injector cleaner is not helping. I am also going to pull the Forge 007 to see if there is any other information I can pull from this.

Have you checked the mounting bracket for cracks?
You said it passes the compression check on all 4 cylinder.
What where the #'s across the all 4?
What did the sparks plugs looks like?
Have you pulled the the hoses and checked them for oil? If not I would.

I’m a Toyota-Scion tech.
A few possibilities.
First the stalling.
Stalling is caused (in your situation) due to exhaust back pressure or intake back pressure which simply means BOV did not open and caused the stall…. you can check your BOV operation and may need to use yellow spring instead of blue, check for contamination
Second – Smoke
Smoke can be white or a variation of light blue… the problem might be oil in combustion chamber-from back pressure which also caused the stalling- your spark plugs got contaminated with oil; which cause rough idle and poor acceleration…can be fixed by cleaning or replacing spark plugs…
Third – Sound
It sounds like the BOV is contaminated with oil as well as your mass air flow meter … get it serviced…
With all these problems your engine will sound and perform abnormal. Good luck!
Tip-change your oil grade to 10W 30 or 10W 40 (you car needs it because of the demands of the supercharger..)

I was wondering more about this smoke you are seeing?? At first you said it was white but then said you get some black under partial throttle?? Maybe you are running rich under part throttle?? Something could be leaking intake air when you are driving. Also white smoke is definitely not a good thing. Maybe a head gasket/warped head?? I know the car is new but it has been SC'ed for over 10k miles.

BOV? Did you mean BPV?
I get the occasional black smoke, but thats only if I get on it before ive allowed it to get to full operating temp. Once the temp has stableized and ive had about 10 mins of drive time it wont do it??? dunno whats up with that, but the car runs like a champ.
Sorry for the overdue update:
There is oil in the BPV and in the air intake tubing for the SC. I swapped in the bosch 110 that I had laying around until I can find the original bosch that was in it. The sound has been getting louder and is now audible at idle. That has allowed me to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. It sounds like the impeller is hitting the inside of the supercharger and is causing enough vibration to now be felt through the stearing wheel while driving. I think I need to redouble my efforts to find the OEM BPV. I would hate to be have voided my warranty due to the BPV. It would be a shame.
I am glad this happened before I decieded to put on the pulley, had it happened a few days later I would have removed the tamperproof cap on top of everything else.

No one has been hurt by TRD. They hurt themselves. I'm not even going to beat this dead horse again. Just take your can to the dealer, have them fix it under warranty, and leave it alone. Please believe me when I tell you if you play with this thing it's going to cost you.
Another one bites the dust... And Another one gone and another one gone, Another one bites the dust.
DO NOT tell them that you changed out the BPV... They WILL void your warranty. Also, if you have anything so much of an intake on there, GO back to stock.. Try to find that stock BPV because there is a chance, if they find out it isn't the stock BPV, they will void the warranty....
Trust me, I am on my third supercharger...

yup, go as far back to stock as you can, and hope to god for the best.
the noise sounds like the bearing thing. best to not drive it cause the longer you drive it with the bearing failure you risk more damage to the engine.
and if you dont get warrentied there is a thread that has pictures and part numbers for stuff on the SC you could probably rebuild it and maybe even stronger...

Good news is I found the stock BPV
Bad news is that I took it to the dealer (as I work there) and had another guy look at it. I told him that I have a trip to make tomarrow that will be running the car at highways speeds for 3 hours up and 3 hours back. I was told to have a good trip and to drive safe.
I will be packing my broke down car stuff, ya know, the GB advance, book with a flashlight and other such things to wait on the tow truck for. My shop has looked at the car 3 times since the car shut down and I have been in contact with them throughout. On the flip side, I am one of only 3 SC'd tC's in the area and the dealership doesnt have much experiance diagnosing them. The computer thinks the car is fine so they have nothing to go on. I see where they are coming from and I also hear this little voice that is telling me to be prepared for a blown engine that had best be covered under warranty. I have seen engines modded to extremes and been covered. The only part that was ever aftermarket on my car (other then toyota/scion/trd) was a BPV to correct the boost bleed issue that the stock unit had. I believe that a 7 lbs SC was advirtised and thats what I wanted not one that bleed out the last two pounds.
Will keep yall appraised. I will bring my camera too so I can have pics if it really does blow.

YES, THATS RIGHT YOU ARE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, IF ANY THING HAPPENS ON YOUR TRIP, AND YOU ARE ALSO RIGHT ABOUT MOST TOYOTA TECHS DON'T KNOW HOW TO DIAG TRD COMPONENTS. AND TRUST ME THEY AREN'T HAPPY TO ABOUT TRING TO FIX THEM , WARRANTY PAY IS ,SH*T.I BET, THEY DIDN'T EVEN TAKE IT APART,NOT EVEN THE INTAKE HOSE TO CHECK FOR OIL.....NOT UNLESS YOU ASKED THEM TOO... I'M A TOYOTA TECH WORKING AT A TOYOTA DEALER.
