hi guys
i have a custom made turbo kit
it got a T3-T4 turbo and an external 38mm waste gate

the problem is that the boost is too high (around 16PSI)
i wanna lower the boost down but the waste gate is not adjustible
so here's the thing:

is it ok if i cut the spring????
because i want from 5 to 6 PSI of boost

Problem solved.

 

With the problems that could arrise from a stuck wastegate, it is highly advisable to not ghetto rig anything inside of it.

 

why dont you just buy a new WG spring??????????????

 

you need to buy a new spring...

im no engineer but... i THINK i can explain why you CANT cut the spring. this is just from what i remember from my CAD/engineering stuff from high school so i might be wayyy off base but i think if you cut the spring you actually increase the force required to compress it. remember, F = kx. F(force) would be your boost, k is the spring rate(a shorter spring of the same diamter results in a higher spring rate, theres another formula for this but i dont remember it) and x is how far you compress the spring(this is constant in this scenario, the wastegate "opens" the same amt no matter what) so... simple multiplication... if you increase k (by shortening the spring) and x remains the same... F has to be increased to compress the spring, thus higher boost..

did that make sense? lol. if my logic is flawed someone tell me... in short, dont cheap out, buy a new spring. hell even if im wrong, buy a new spring... NEVER a good idea to cut corners on an aftermarket turbo kit...

 

its like cutting springs to lower ur ride, its not going to work properly and break. dont give yourself headaches by cutting the spring and just buy a spring.

 

My friend has a turbo X-Runner and he cut the spring on his WG and its been like that for over a year and no problems i say do it. but if you have the money buy a new one, i got a new one.

yup i've cut off about 60% of that spring and now the car runs about 6.5 PSI

by the way, i did cut my ride's springs hhhhheheheh talk about cheap

wow this is a very stupid thread... i can't believe you cut your wastegate spring... i don't care whether your friend's brother's girlfriend did it to her turbo beetle with an okay result, wastegate springs are NOT expensive. i feel bad for your car.

yeah, either i'm too scared to try out anything or i'm not dumb enough to cut a wastegate spring that was specifically engineered to be a certain length. good one. you feel sorry for my pocket? are you serious? you're the one who's going to be spending thousands on a new engine.

Seriously, how much is a wastegete spring?
The question is, if you pieced the turbo together yourself, why didn't you just get a wastegate that had the right size spring in it to begin with?

Don't get me wrong. I'm glad it worked for you. But I would not reccomend it for an extended period, and suggets you get the proper size spring as soon as you can.
