Default S/C Idler Pulley Questions

How long should one last?

I just replaced it last December and it is making a lot of chatter. Just replaced bearings thinking it was that.

Ive seen setups where the belt goes on either side of it. Is there a way to tell which setup my belt should be following? Either on the outside, closer to the front of the car, or inside, closer to the cabin.

Also, the pulley is:

Idler Pulley Assembly / 2.5" (6/8-Rib)
Part Number: 1210517

Correct?

Thanks for the help!

Post a picture and we can tell you if your belt is on there correctly, the pulleys should last a long time, if the bearing goes bad it can damage your pulley, but nothing else in the pulley that can go "bad"

first picture showing the path of the belt

second showing gap on right side of pulley, but referring back to the first, the belt rides the edge. if not, over hangs a little, 1mm, after I got home from work. drove it around and it corrected itself. but it seems to cool and slide a little.

so, what seems to be happening is

it should look like
| |

but is very slightly
/ /

ive tried adding a washer but that just
\ \

and pushed the belt to the far inside.

EDIT: when I replaced the aux pulley in December, the bearing inside seemed to eggshell out the pulley. it was even at a point where you could spin the bearing housing freely.

suggestions? looks like im going to summit tomorrow and getting a pulley...but would like to remedy this...

Looks like your SC pulley may not shimmed correctly and is causing torque on the idler pulley.

How many shims is it suppose to have?

Shimmed?

There is an insert for the pulley, maybe that's distorted?

I've tried a washer, but just pushes the belt to the other side.

I have the 07 s/c if I haven't already stated that.

The shims are very thin washers that come in sizes of hundredths of inches, you can pick some up at grainger i believe, just make sure the internal diameter will fit onto the shaft.

Okay, got a bunch of shims. I shimmed the aux pulley, and now it sits closer to the center.

But now what I noticed is that the aux pulley leans out on top by a mm maybe? So the squeaking was the belt moving on the pulley.

So, is there an easy way to get rid of the lean? Is it as simple as sanding a shim down on one side? Is there any way to measure the vertical lean accurately? Maybe with laser pointers? Use one on a good pulley then another on the aux pulley and with math find the angle?

Suggestions?

I think you are overthinking this, what do you mean by vertical lean? Is the pulley not spinning straight?

Correct. As in, looking at it head on, from in front of the car, so you're seeing the side of the pulley, my second picture, there is more space from the belt to the edge of the pulley on top, then there is on bottom.

So it's doing \ \ slightly.

If the pulley is not spinning straight that means either the bearings are bad or when the bearings went bad last time they increased the inner diameter of the pulley where the bearings mound and it is wobbly now. No way to fix this unless you replace the pulley. You could try to get some loctite 680 and glue the bearings into the pulley and see if that helps. Also, a little bit of play is ok, even when the s/c and car were almost brand new the belt tracking wasn't 100% perfect, it did move a bit.

I think, you think, I'm talking about the s/c pulley, when I'm actually talking about the aux pulley :/

Is this the case?

no, i'm talking about the idler pulley which just free spins and doesn't do anything else.

Re-reading it, it makes sense. Sorry for the confusion.

I'll take it out and play around with it, give it a good look over.

Thanks for the suggestions/info!
