Default Supercharger or Turbo? I need help...

Yes I searched but there were no people in the same situation as me...so here it goes.

I am in HS and this is my first car. I love my car and will be keeping it through college and I want to make it a fun, good looking, and fast car. I am trying to figure out whether or not to go S/C or turbo. This summer I will pull in around $4000 or so to spend on upgrades for my car. Here are the questions I have.

1. What is the best kit to go for and about how much will it cost me installed?

2. I do alot of city driving and am wondering about what will my mileage be?

3. What determines whether you are using boost or not? (I know...noob question)

4. Your opinion on the matter. Be honest please. I want to have a good car and I want to be smart about what I do to it so please help me out here.

Thank you

-Drew

I think that you honestly should have searched, because honestly, you could have found all of these answers.

My opinion is ... you dont have the budget, and I mean constant income to go turbo. SC ... maybe and there are pluses like warranty with this route.

3. What determines whether you are using boost or not? (I know...noob question)

Are you kidding me? You want to boost? I am not trying to e a dick but you REALLLLLLLLY need do more research if you are asking questions like this.

PS ... are you 23 and in highschool?

dont buy headers intake or exhaust or anything, wait till you have the money which u said 4k u have to blow, just get a basik kit over at turbo toyotas if u have a nasty itch to mod b4 ur ready to boost, get some suspension done.

whyindustries.com

and boost the hell out of it

From what I've read and researched, neither are a slam dunk when it comes to reliability. But here's why I think turbo'ing would be a bad idea for you:

A.) You'll flush the stock warranty right down the toilet the second you bolt it on. And how long did you say you were planning on keeping it? That's a looong way to go with absolutely nothing covered by the dealership.

B.) Driving the car hard is what determines whether you boost or not. If you keep your shifts low in the RPM range then you'll avoid getting into boost and save gas. But boosted engines don't last nearly as long. And if you're planning on keeping the car for another 5 or 6 years then you'd best be prepared to spend a lot more than $4,000 on maintenance, replacing failed parts, and just general upkeep.

How new is this car? Mileage, year?

My specific advice to you would be to buy the TRD Supercharger and get it installed by the dealer. If anything goes wrong with it then its free to fix. Its not the money pit that the turbo would be.

i would not do either, your still a new driver, i would drive the car as is and get a feel for how it drives. then if you feel you want more power then boost. lots of people are goign too say this too you "do not boost on a budget" you will regret it. plus when you boost gas will cost more and like others have said maintenance will cost more. with that said

i would say go S/C installed buy the dealer, since you really don't know what boost is. GL

Its an automatic. Don't waste your money on performance bc you won't get much out of it.

I will answer the when are you in boost questiobn since it hasnt been answered correctly.

Boost is determined by throttle position and is not rependent on when you shift or how other your drive your car. Boost is the opposite of vacume. You will remain in vacume when just cruising or moderatly pressing the pedal. So it is VERY possible to drive a car all day every day with out ever hitting boost and still shifting as high as you want in the rpm range. its all about how hard you press that pedal.

And personally, your 16, this is the last thing you should be considering. I have no clue how you are coming up with $4000 over a summer, but that wont cover a turbocharger, and if you ahve problems during the school year, you are screwed. If you do anything do the supercharger, while I dont like mine, for just someone wanting alittle go, its perfect.

And on that note, your probably dont need that power because you probably wont be having time to go to a track or autocross the thing, so KEEP IT OFF THE STREETS. Dumb things happen in highschool when kids have some power under their foot.

Thank you for clarifying the boost question.

But I wanted to address the whole reason I'm getting a turbo or S/C. No I don't want it so I can race my friends and show them up. I could do that now if i wanted to with what i have in there now. I want this because my dad would always tell me when I was a kid playing need for speed underground (yes the first one) that I would never have a car like those. This is my chance to show him up and have a show car, so its mostly a pride thing just for me, as well as me loving cars and doing things to them.

However, one of your quotes really hit home and would like to give you a reason for everyone to keep it off the streets. My sister was a big partier when she was 17 and would go out every weekend. Well one weekend she went out, she drove, and she got in a race on a 2 lane road with another car. Because she was intoxicated she had no decision making power and went with it. She took a corner at around 65-75 in a 1999 Susuki Esteem and hit a brick sign. The other car left. She was knocked out in the colision and rushed to the hospital. Someone upstairs was looking out for her and she survived, but not by much. So please keep it off the streets and don't drink and drive, my sister got lucky it was a sign she hit and not another person.

Anyways i just wanted to address that and give you a reason I will never race on the streets, I could never hold that weight on my shoulders if I were to hurt someone.

Thank you for the answer, more are greatly appreciated.

Go some place else with your garbage. Some people don't want a manual or don't know how to drive one. You can still get performance out of an Auto, it just may take more to get it all out.

It isn't garbage, he is telling him the truth. Dumping tones of cash into an Automatic tC is a waste of time, call me an arsehole or whatever you wish its the truth. Sure you can add anything you want, but is it really worth it?

Lets look at racing, hands down there are going to be cars like a stock Corolla, base Civic, and Hyundai Elantra (ALL MANUAL) that are going to either hang with or beat an Automatic tC when it is with even basic mods.

Lets look at AutoX or even strip, and even with a turbo or S/C you can't cant an LSD for the automatic, another downside. I have seen one do AutoX, it ain't pretty, nor did it sound pretty. Waaa WOONNNG A waaa WOOOONNGG

I am not nocking Automatics in general, they have they uses, ie; My Girlfriend, My Grandma ... no wait she drives a stick also, and driving in heavy traffic. NOT FOR PERFORMANCE.

Exactly the same thing I am doing. If you could let me know how it feels driving it and stuff like that after you finish the install that would be awesome. I just want a fun car that I will enjoy for the next 5 years. And the only reason I drive an auto is trying to get home from school and work is a PITA because of traffic.

Was what I said really that offensive? Jesus, I obviously struck a nerve with someone.
