Turbo Decisions and Questions!!
Here's the deal guys! I'm looking at getting a turbo for my car and i'm looking at the ZPI stage 1 and the Dezod kit... I've heard positives and negatives of both kits and I just don't know which to go with! Im not looking for a drag car only out of this, I want to daily drive this car and just enjoy the kit and maybe go to the strip every once in a while! Just some extra power others wont be expecting around town on the street. This will be my first turbo kit and i've done a lot of research, and still have questions! Like i have close to 55K miles on my car and it has not been driven hard, but i'm still concerned on how reliable my car will be! Is that too many miles on the engine to put a turbo on? I don't want to have to tear down the engine or anything cause it blew up! Eventually I know I will need to, but this is my only car right now and I just want a little more insight on what to expect! I know the engine is strong! Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

your engine isn't too old for a turbo. i think anytime before 80 to 100k is fine for installing a turbo kit.
i am pretty much aiming for the same goal you are and this is how i figure it.
dezod:great kit from what i read, good for a daily driver
zpi: seems more hardcore track dedicated and needs more tuning. also, i'm not so cool with removing the factory crash bar after this:

i myself and really partial to the turbonetics kit because it sounds so bulletproof, hadn't heard of a single problem, ball bearing turbo, full one year warranty. and it is tuned with a unichip and there is a unichip tuner right near my house.

Just dont get boost crazy and your engine will be fine. I have 47,000 miles on my car right now. If I were you I'd go with the Dezod kit with the new Innovative F2 turbo. I wouldnt boost higher then 7-8 psi if you want the motor to have a good life.

Im in the same place you are. I was leaning more toward the ZPI stage one kit with the Emanage ultamite because it comes with the intercooler too and to me feels a little safer than the Stage 0, only because eventually with the stage 0 you'll want to upgrade to an intercooler anyway. The Tnetics kit is a little to expensive for my taste and even though it's a ball bearing turbo its stil a little big therefore taking a little long to spool up. I have read to much about the dezod kit but Im gonna check it out.
Things will fail much sooner then later with the turbo. If you're going to do this you have to get into the mind set that you may have to shell out some money to keep your car running solid. As for the kits, I haven't heard any real problems with the actaul reliability of ZPI, Dezod, or turbonetics. The turbonetics kit has a recirculated BOV that will help MAF and your fuel. Although most people on this site have been running the HKS atmospheric BOV with little trouble. Personally I'm going with Dezod and the Innovative F2 54 t3/t4. The best thing about them is you can get just about any trim turbo you want, Again you're in for a ride with what ever you decide to go with. Good luck.
I agree with Rob, I think you should EXPECT to have problems and have money set aside just in case! That is the best mindset to have because you never know.
Also, Whocares is absolutely right. Each person will have their own bias, similar to the kit they own (for good reason) however, you will decide which one you want. ZPI stage 1 is great, dezod kit is great, turbonetics kit is great, et cetera. Good luck on the choice!

The turbo itself isnt that big in the turbonetics kit. The compressor on the other hand is. Ive never heard or had a problem with spooling up my turbo. I hit full boost around 3,200 rpm's.
Contrary to poplular belief, ALL of the turbo kits are Daily Driven and streetable....INCLUDING the ZPI kits. Just because you see them racing them the most out of everybody does not equate to "track only and requires more tunning". That is far from the truth. It requires no more tunning than any of the other respectable kits. And we drive ours daily. It just so happens the kit makes a great track kit as well.
PS...Of course I'm bias, but I do like to provide acurate information instead of skeptisim or assumptions.

the main reason why i say the zpi kit is more hardcore isn't because of the drivability issues at all, but more beacause the intercooler is bigger and requires the crash bar be removed. which to me is a pretty big compromise and probably best for a track only car than a daily driven vehicle.
i asked zpi about that, and they said smallers ones aren't as efficient and that it is a low speed crash bar, and that at high speed collisions you still have all the crumple zones and airbags to protect you.
be that as it may, it still just doesn't sit easy with me and i wonder just alittle about laws say about tampering with a cars safety equipment since you have to have seatbelts and air bags, that bar might also be federally mandated.

Thats a nice turbo then, didnt know it hit full boost around those RPMs. How much boost are you running?
From a neutral standpoint, all kits have their highs and lows.
For those who want everything to their personal standards/goals, put together a custom setup. It may come out cheaper or the same pricewise as a kit, but you'll get every component you want and to your power goal's advantage.

Thats a good idea but Im not turbo set up savey enought to be able to get the oil lines, computer, and wiring done right. That is the only thing that has stopped me from doing it already. I had originally planned on doing that but it seems a little hard. Definatley cheaper, I did the math on most of this: with a 16g turbo like the ZPI one, a megasquirt (I have a guys who knows how to use these pretty good), two oil pans (one for back up) lines, manifold, downpipe, and intercooler kit, I think it came out to be a little under $3000 and that would be putting out some good HP. So Ive definatly thought about it and now that you bring it up I might still.

When it comes to these kits it's not really whos better than who, but really whos name you want on your car. These companies have put out very comparable products and it seems to be coming down to very minute details. I can personally say I like my turbonetics kit and have not been disappointed in any way by it.
