Default Turbo Kits? Built Internals? Help Please!

Hey guys, I'm thinking of dropping the Dezod turbo kit for my '09 tC 5-speed. I just want to know from people who have a turbo; when is the appropriate time to get new camshafts, pistons, etc. I was talking to a guy earlier and he said that the stock engine parts can't handle the turbo? So they need to be replaced? If anybody could shed some more light on this topic for me, that would be great!

engine will run great stock with turbo within reason....lots have gone up to 300hp including myself, a few have surpassed that mark on a stock 2az. Its all about tune and install.

for goals of 300 whp or less, all you need is the turbo kit (including engine management, gauges, and a stronger clutch.

i have 308 whp with a turbo pushing 14 psi. stock engine. you can check my profile for more mods, but the tc's engine is very sturdy. not saying it can't be screwed up, but building the engine is not necessary.

Default Turbo

So say I'm running 8.5 psi, and I push the car to the limits maybe a couple times a week. My engine won't blow up or anything right? I'm not looking to make crazy numbers like some guys...just need something to get a little more respect from my buddies who roll around in E92's...

Someone was also telling me that that the car will become unstable and won't turn when running at a higher PSI rating. Would 8.5 be considered high...?

no fwd car will turn if its putting alot of power to the ground. i used to drive the canyons by my house a couple times a week in the summer and i was turbo, you just have to be aware of the powerband.

8.5psi is not high psi, i would say its pretty average for DD tCs. im running 8psi and sometimes i beat on it pretty hard. my car has been through alot at 50k and its still going strong.

if you have the money then go for it but research ALOT because things can go wrong and you need to have an idea what you are dealing with. i run a greddy kit but i think the dezod kit is GREAT for the money and they have great customer service and are all over this forum.

Yeah, so i'm thinking im just going to start off with the kit/EMS first and see how it turns out. And then add on the camshafts, sleeves, etc. Thanks for the help guys!

Stock tC 7-10lbs will run fine. How much are you willing to spend and what are you goals are the first two questions you need to answer.

No matter what psi your at, if you don't have a good tune bad things can happen. Tune is the deciding factor on how long your motor lasts. I would say the time to start worrying about your motor is when you get near the 340+whp mark. PSI doesn't matter that much as a small turbo will flow a lot less than a bigger turbo at the same psi.

what this guy said....

its never about the psi is all about the flow and power.... the breaking point does start above 340hp, but things will go boom at any hp if your tune isnt good

i have an 8.7psi spring and spike 10psi, I maker 297whp on a stock engine, and I beat on my car I drag race it monthly if not bi-monthly and it holds together great, just get a good turbo, a good wastegate, and a good tune

if your not looking for anything crazy then a complete kit will include ems and such, like ptunings dezod greedy/ then all you need to do is find a reputable tuner to take care of your car, a nice set of tires and clutch and your good to go.

cams are not something necessary for our car, if you plan later on to go into a build i would sleeve the block and keep same compression.

research, this forum is full of useful facts as well as testimony from people who have built and non built engines.

It is all about tune and pressure in your engine not how much HP you have. There is a calculation to determine the max safe boost you can run with your compression ratio and octane available. Yes if you run higher boost you can retard ignition timing but at the same time this causes higher EGT's.

I don't necessarily agree with this statement. Yes psi does matter, but what about CFM? From this statement, you make it sound like I can put a GT35 turbo on my car and run the same amount of boost as a 16g turbo, and make the same amount of power. Not knocking you or anything, but I think whp is a lot more consistent as far as when these motors go, not psi. I do agree that the tune plays a HUGE role in how long the motor lasts, but it does get to a certain point where the internals just wont hold anymore.

I'm the same here. .6 Bar Tial. Boost spikes to 10 on the dot and falls to 9.5 throughout the RPM band till redline.

On another note:

I think we can all agree to disagree because finding a balance of psi and power is key. High EGT's will kill a motor and so will too much power. This unfortunately has been researched the hard (and expensive) way lol. Read read read and read some more before you dive in head first if you aren't turbo and tuning savvy.

There will always be some variables. I am just saying using the correct fuel (calculators online) and not over retarding ignition timing (higher egt's). Just like you said different turbos different CFM's but wastegate springs don’t differ. Everyone’s WHP could be different cause of slipping clutch, different size tires, weaker engine, old turbo, dynos, correction factors, etc.
