Shaft play can be from side-to-side and/or in and out. Every turbo has a little shaft play. You don't want any in and out shaft play - but side to side is okay as long as the wheels are not touching the housings.

I think it when the little bearing inside is broken.

yeah pretty much what b real said, my old turbo had a little side to side shaft play but worked fine and never once caused an issue, ideally you want 0 shaft play but as long as its minimal you should be ok.

And yeah bearing wear can cause it, make sure its getting adequate oil and draining freely and dont do hot stops, make sure you let it idle for a min or so if you dont have a turbo timer before you shut the car off, its a pain in the butt but i ruined my last turbo because of it.

Have it taken apart and inspected by a professional. (ie if its a Garrett turbo send it to a PD (performance distributor)

Shaft play until accurately measured is all based on ones personal opinion.

It can be fixed easily and its affordable as long as its not a hint of some larger issues.

Get it inspected.

Todd
