Turbocharging Vs Emissions

Turbocharging Vs Emissions
Ok guys, so im thinking of picking up a Tc not the newer style but 05-10. i was 100% going to boost it. i just wanna know that if they 1) can pass emmisions while boosted. and 2) not throw any CEL's with a good tune?
and are there any years that handle boost better then others?

I live in MD and a few months back I passed emissions w/o issue with turbo, no cats and a very LOUD 3" exhaust. The only question I was asked was what kind of wheels I had. YMMV

That way I can bs without completely lying to them. If that's not enough to make them happy, I've held on to my OEM header that way it will pass. Then just roll home and swap everything right back.
I have to say that I'm actually a little bit surprised that it would pass with a turbo kit installed, since it isn't an OEM option and are sold w/ a disclaimer that clearly states that it is intended to only be used off road (track, race, etc. )

Maybe I got lucky this time but they tested exactly the same as they did the last time I was there with a stock vehicle. No mirrors under the car to look for cats, no under-hood inspection, just a quick OBD scan.
BTW, my latest "tune" with the SS Enricher, 440cc and 6psi is still perfection. No CELs, no pending codes, no FIC hiccups and it starts, idles and drives like it came from Scion like this. The only fault I can find is that 6psi and ~260BHP is the limit for this piggy-free EMS strategy on 93 pump. IMHO this is the perfect EMS solution for a low-budget AT boost setup. Even a $700 valve body doesn't actually increase the tq capacity of the weak U241E tranny and mine shifts great at this power level with just a B&M cooler and M1 ATF.

good to hear..auto tc tranny doesnt seem to want to shift properly without an upgraded valve body. its like the fluid pressure inside is just so high it overpowers the solenoid. only way around it is to let off the gas and get back on it. I had one that would peg the rev limit before it would shift.
how are your fuel trims doin with that SS?

thanks for the replies. I livei n Newyork (longisland) andi always thought emissions were strict. my subie passes with a full exhaust with 1 HFC and no CEL's. im pretty sure if you dont have a CEL they dont care, because i know guys with no cats and no CEL and they pass fine

I haven't really checked for fuel trim changes with the SSE since it kicks in so randomly. Any time I open the TB enough to get boost, the AFR drops to ~12.3 and stays there until OL.

If your subie passes with no exhaust then the boosted TC should pass. You can also have a calibrator(tuner) create a green tune for you to run on while getting tested and then switch your map back to the street tune when your done.
I thought NY was more strict about exhaust systems. I miss NY been in florida too long.

I'm not sure what the emission testers are allowed to check in MD if you run across one who actually takes their job seriously but normally they just plug into the OBD2 port on OBD2 vehicles and check for active or pending codes and sufficient time between code resets. You can't reset a CEL before the test and pass. You have to be code-free for a few weeks (not sure exactly how long).
Maybe I got lucky this time but they tested exactly the same as they did the last time I was there with a stock vehicle. No mirrors under the car to look for cats, no under-hood inspection, just a quick OBD scan.

I used to work at an emission center back in the day testing the cars. Its changed a little since ive worked there as no car is driven on the rollers anymore. For newer vehicles you are correct in that you cant just reset the codes you have to be code free to pass. In MD you will never have to pop your hood as it is not part of the testing process. Also you dont have to worry about the mirrors they use, they are more for leaking fluids more than anything. Just go to the youngest kid you see and youll be good to go believe me he is not making enough money to care what you have under the hood just be code free and youll pass
