Smile Turbonetics Kit on Stock Airbox Mod

I just fitted the stock airbox to my Turbonetics kit. The reason I did this is because the 07+ ecu's are very touchy in regards to their sensors when tuning a boosted car. The Turbonetics setup has the MAF in a 3" pipe and the car was designed to read off of a 2.5". Additionally, Turbonetics doesn't officially make an 07+ kit. Aftermarket companies (turbokits.com, turbochargers.com, etc) piece together fuel management and adapter plates for the MAF sensors since everything else bolts right up. The MAF adapter plate pulls the sensor an additional 3/8-1/2" higher than the kit was originally designed for. In the long run, it may not make that big of a difference because most of the cars reliability and performance comes from the tune (M-Tuning FTW) but for perfectionists like myself, I like to explore avenues that can lead to easier tuning and better drivability. For maximum power, I don't know if I would recommend this but the stock airbox can flow just fine for street worthy power. Here are a few pics of the finished product after a quick run to the local parts store and a few universal parts cut to fit like a glove (sorry for crappy cell pics)

Looks like Descendant knew what they were doing with the stock air box. Seems like the people that were bashing them really stuck their feet in their mouths.

I'm glad everyone likes it. Mike and I were always debating this idea and after a long conversation with Rob from Descendant, we managed to get on this topic. He told me of the development of their kit and one of his customers getting 340+ whp by a good tune and 14 psi with everything else out of the box... including the stock airbox. I'm not in the turbo market to make the more HP than everyone else, I just want it reliable and very fun to drive I hope to see more pics of this done later on!

I've already got enough bling under there to stand out at a Flava-Flave concert.

no polish, chrome FTW! but did you notice a slight lag with it? though its more restrictive, i think it sucks colder air than the typical high flow filter everyone is running

Nah, just checked the IAT's and road worthiness. No real difference except my recirc'd BOV is quieter now I'm gonna run some ducting from the driver fog light hole up to the stock box to see if that helps driving IAT's. It won't be sealed or anything, just a direct air path to keep the hot air away from intake. BTW, I had to cut off the whole bottom of the box so it is just open filter to get the clearance I needed from the hood and piping. If I knew a welder, I could have had him make me a new intake pipe that could use the whole factory assembly.

oh great its a modified stock air box then, yeah plastics does good job keeping hot air away still the intercooler still plays the major player cooling your air charge, how bout that lil duct going to the fender still there?

The stock duct tube piece doesn't clear. It attaches to the bottom of the box (which I cut off) and the airbox normally sits closer to the motor. Due to the nature of my intake pipe, it had to be relocated closer to the fender. I'm going to make a custom piping alternative that runs from the driver fog light hole to the opening inside the fender to help route colder air to the box while driving. You won't see the ugly because I have an RS3 that covers that hole with the Kenstyle kit and another grille in front of it
