Default Twin Turbo

Okay guys I been thinkin of eventually installin a twin-turbo on my tC. Another thing about me makin this topic is in my English 102 class I'm doin a research essay for the whole semester and I'm doin it on why the U.S. Emission Laws bans twin-turboed vehicles from the U.S. The Nissan Skyline GT-R, Nissan 300Z, 300ZX, Toyota Supra; all of those have twin-turbos and had production canceled in the U.S. coz of emission laws. I've searched and can't find anything so if anyone knows what I can find let me know plz. Thanx

You sure it was because of emission laws and not the fact that cops cant catch them

look at the cars you posted about being TT, then look at our car. IDK much about engine and whatnot but i would think it would be ALOT of fab and work, dont know for sure if it can be possible to do it. Maybe a prayer would help too!

What would be the point of a twin turbo on a tc? You would need to have incredibly small turbos to spool them and actually enjoy it. Maybe you should focus on 1 turbo and making power with that.

Why a twin-turbo on a tC? Because we have the room under the hood for it. Another reason? They look awesome at car shows and ppl jus stare at it. Also yamaha cops not catchin them may be a reason but the emission laws have alot to do with it too. So does anyone know anything about it?

I have said this before.. this is sequential charging, not true twin charging. It is an inline 4, not a V motor. But some will tell me how wrong I am for using the correct terms

You could do it.. it would be a big mess and probably not gain you much of anything over using a properly sized single turbo and cost a ton of money to get even close to running correctly. But if you are going for the "doing it because you can" factor then go ahead I guess.

I'm not really worried if I CAN do it atm, I'm jus throwin the idea out there. I'm more interested on why they're illegal in the U.S. because of emission laws. I need that info asap, thats why I'm askin here lol/

my only hypothesis as to why they would be banned is the fact that turboed cars generally run rich.....so a twin turbo is gonna be pumping a lot more air and fuel in, so even more rich fuel out??

now...running a little leaner consistently, and with good cats, it probably would pass emissions.....

The added air doesnt necessitate it running rich since you can still add the proper amount of fuel to maintain a good A/F. Running higher pressures and more heat in the cylinders is what requires a richer tune to prevent detonation.

Running it at a normal A/F would possibly get you past emissions, but you would damage the engine if you did it for long that way.

From everything that I've heard the twin-turbo put out more CO2 and make the "Greenhouse Effect" and "Global Warming" occur faster if most cars run twin-turbos. What I don't understand is that not everyone is going to have a twin-turbo vehicle so how would it hurt?

I believe the real reason is because the price of the "twin turbo" (high powered Japanese cars) became too high here in the US and they would not sell well. I am sure Toyota and Nissan could detune their twin turbo cars to pass emissions easily but would also add to the cost. I think a Supra at the final year was over $45k?? I would look more into prices and sales at this point.

They didnt stop producing them for emissions reasons. It just started to be pricing and popularity. Some car makers still do the twin turbo... Audi was running them for a while.. Bentley still does...

With a proper tune, the emissions are fine... I am running no cats on my 94 supra twin turbo and it passes emissions here with flying colors...

have you already forgotten the bmw 335i? thats a twin turbo six cylinder engine. it is expensive, but not federally outlawed.
