pretty much boring through the main caps, you would want to use a line bore.

 

Like the above states.. Basiclly used on the cam caps or crank main caps in the event that the bearing surfaces on the cams or the main bearings become soo chewed up that opening the clearance is the only option to remove any groves from the surface... Once the part is line bored, it is then line honed and then an oversized bearing is put into its place.
