This is due to people not following installation instructions or proper knowledge on how to properly install a turbo or turbo kit.

x2

Just from the way a car rides, you can tell if the person half-assed everything, or took their time doing things. The one tell-tale sign, is if they properly used Teflon Tape for the oil sensor/feed line. Because if they missed that step, you just know they missed a hundred other things.

That is why you have to use an oil restrictor. Some people aren't doing their research and just installing the turbo without an oil restrictor this is why they are having issues. Thrust load is the load placed on the turbo shaft when the turbo is spooled.
its true an oil restrictor generally required using BB turbo.. its just too bad i dont see much discussion or emphasis on that.. and problem still exist with choosing the right oil restrictor since the orifice is dependent on the actual oil pressure going the turbo and the ideal pressure going to the turbo, and very few are able to measure that but rather buy some generic restrictor that has their turbo name on it.. not saying BB are weak, theyre just more vulnerable not done right unlike journal bearings that you just slap on and just do regular maintenance

Oil restrictors are generic to an extent but you get what you pay for. If you buy one made by Garrett then you can rest assured it is the right size, I got mine from Dezod but ATP turbo has them as well. I think Garretts list a mast amount of turbos the restrictor is sufficent for. People need to do all of there research before just putting on a turbo. If someone puts on a BB turbo without a restrictor that should tell you something right there, they shouldn't be boosted cause they aren't doing the right research prior just like people trying to boost without engine management is a fail situation from the start.
does garrett make their own restrictor? i searched that for a long time but i didnt see one... What i see though are oil restrictors labeled for garrett turbos.. But then again what garrett recommends is to actually get a restrictor that will get you the ideal pressure, not too small to starve for oil but enough ideal pressure.. notice they will not specify which one for a specific turbo.. Most would work but could possibly miss..

This is just an example from ATP's website

http://www.atpturbo.com/Merchant2/me...egory_Code=BCS

at the bottom it shows the different turbo models it fits.

yeah thats the one i've been using but thats not a product made by garrett.. notice its not turbo or vehicle specific just something that would fit the turbo and works with many cars..

Here are some more http://www.atpturbo.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?

It isn't made by Garrett but I will keep looking. It shows which turbo's to use it for and it can be used on non Garrett turbo's but you have to match the restrictor for the size turbo. Even though there is a very broad range they can be used it still can't be used for all of them.

The garrett site mentioned that their BB turbos require 40-45psi which require a 0.040 opening on the restrictor

^^ they mentioned 0.04" but thats just an example, variables depends on amount of oil pressure you have on from your source..

"Oil pressure entering a ball-bearing turbocharger needs to be between 40 psi and 45 psi at the maximum engine operating speed. For many common passenger vehicle engines, this generally translates into a restrictor with a minimum of 0.040" diameter orifice upstream of the oil inlet on the turbocharger center section. Again, it is imperative that the restrictor be sized according to the oil pressure characteristics of the engine to which the turbo is attached. Always verify that the appropriate oil pressure is reaching the turbo."

Im a little confused there. If BB turbos need 40-45psi which would result in a restrictor with a minimum opening of .040, wouldn't this be what we need for our cars?

^^ yeah its says generally its 0.04" for many vehicles.. thats why i said it could vary and its ideal if you can measure what is the actual pressure.. im gonna say 0.04 or 0.035 should be fine for our car

I'm running the 30r.. Runs really good. But what you forgot to add was the 57 trim.... It seems to be one of the best fitted turbo for stock motor.. Air flow maps are best calculated with the 57 trim.. My buddy and I calculated this a long long time ago when i was looking for a turbo.. but thats just my opinion.

I emailed the guys at atp and this is what they replied

"Christian,

We use ATP-OIL-021 with the GT3076R with great success on the Scion TC engine:

So pretty much you just replace the one that comes with the turbo for this one?

someone should make a thread about "Oil feed line restriction" or something rather than hijacking the OPs thread lol
