Default Xylene-homemade octane boost

so i have been researching a little and apparently, or obviously, the octane booster that you can buy at any auto parts store is crap and does nothing. but in my research i found some homemade additives that seem like they would actually work.

i found some forums talking about using Xylene and Toulene to up the octane in their fuel.

has anyone heard of this or done it?

toulene is some nasty ish - i had a friend that worked with that stuff in a printing place and apparently its pretty whack and can do some damage if you arent properly protected. But yea only thing store bought octance boosters do is turn my plugs red

im pretty sure both are used at paint thinners that you can buy. toluene is 114 octane and xylene is 117 octane.
this is from a DSM forum but i dont know how factual this information is
Toulene- (114 Octane)
1 Gal with 15 gal of 91 = 92.4375 octane
2 gal with 14 gal of 91 = 93.875 octane
3 gal with 13 gal of 91 = 95.3125 octane

Xylene- (117 Octane)
1 gal with 15 gal of 91 = 92.625 octane
2 gal with 14 gal of 91 = 94.25 octane
3 gal with 13 gal of 91 = 95.875 octane

BE CAREFUL!!!!!! don't want to get the mixture wrong and blow up your engine... or clog/ ruin our fuel system.. no warranty would ever cover that......

In the late 80's turbo formula 1 cars used a lot of Toluene for fuel. I think it got as high as %80 of their fuel (they had to be restricted to 108 octane or something so it was diluted down with some stuff to lower the octane). Anyways they used this still to boost to crazy power numbers. Apparently as the pressure in the combustion chamber increases (as you put more air in your car) most fuel's effective octane decrease therefore increases the risk of knock. The special thing about Toluene is that is does not lose its octane factor as easily as must other fuels. When they discovered this they went from 2 bar boost (about 29 psi) to over 5 bar (about 72 PSI) before they restricted how much boost they could run. Anyways what I am trying to get at is the fuel they had to use in Formula 1 had to be petrol which is very similar to gasoline and I would say that Toluene could be a great help to increase boost in cars that have higher compression like our stock engine. Just to give you an idea of how powerful this stuff is they allowed engines that could only get 700 HP out of them to boost to as high as 1500+ HP (and by the way these are 1.5 liter engines) before they started to regulate and eventually ban turbo engines all together in Formula 1.

just buy a barrel of C16, your cats will go to hell, but if you need to run that high of octane, chances are you prob dont give a crap anyways.

idk about you, but theres actually a gas station a couple minutes from my house that still sells 110 (only its leaded, so youll have the same prob. as the the C16)

i can get 103 or 100 at a local gas station but im just thinking for a little octane boost the Xylene could help and i wouldnt have to drive the extra few miles to the race gas station.. Im not exactly sure how pricey it is but seems like a decent additive since i can only get 91 here in california
I guess no one has really heard of it.

I have used Toulene a few times. I buy it at the local Sherwin Wiliimas paint store in gallon containers. Only time I use it is when I am going to the track. Works great for a little extra protection. Whatever you do, don't get it on your paint though, it will eat through the clear coat.

I used to use the stuff in my WRX too and I never had one problem.

never measured it out, I just added 1 gallon to my full tank to give me an extra octane or two. You can feel the engine seems a bit more willing.

Don't you guys have Sunoco stations around you that sell the 94 octane? Looking at the numbers you'd get from mixing that stuff, it seems like a hell of a risk for not that much gain in octane.

Well I'm no where near any major city or anything and I think there are a couple around here that sell it.

If I really wanted to though, I could take drive up to Watkins Glen and get some race fuel.

there's a few places around here that sell race fuel, by the container, but not at a pump. I know, I'll just go siphon some fuel out of a jet at the air port.
