Default Air Conditioner Whistle

I thought I recall seeing a thread about this, but I couldn't find anything in search.

When I turn on the a/c or even just the fan (without a/c) for that matter, I hear a constant whistle. As I turn the fan higher the whistle gets higher. This leads me to think that its the fan. The only thing that i've done recently to the car that could possibly effect this, is the K&N air filter. The whistle is annoying, so anybody have any advice? I hate dealerships!!! Thanks!

I get it too, only when i close off the far passenger vent. Its so damn hot hear the whistle doesnt really bother me that much, but if its fixable, i would surely fix it.

Mine does it but only when I have it on recirculate. My whisle sounds like it is coming from the sun roof.

I was just out playing with it - still no luck.

I tried checking all of the seals.
I played with the air filter.
I tried circulate.
I moved around all of the vents.
I tried moving the fan from defroster all the way down to feet.

I've determined that the sound is coming from each individual vent (i'm guessing that means that the problem is coming from the system (fan)). The sound gets higher pitched as the fan gets higher. Any ideas anyone?

I have only had my car a couple of weeks so I haven't really had time mess with it much. I'll let you know if I figure out a fix.

Thanks, I'd appreciate that.

Anyone else have any advice? Otherwise i'm gonna have to go to the dealership or hopefully learn to ignore it if it doesnt lead to any more problems!

Is it ONLY when you have A/C on? If so... I'd have it checked out - especially if you can reproduce the sound for the dealer when you're there.

Yea, the sound is easy to reproduce, but not ONLY with the a/c on, also when the a/c is off, but the fan is on. Same problem then as well. Circulate button makes no difference. Ring any bells for you by chance?

Not really... like you said, it sounds like a problem with the fan... the only whistle I know of would be the intake... or possibly the sunroof one some people have. But you would likely know if it was one of those two.

Yep, intake is stock and I played with the sunroof, but like I said, it sounds like its coming from inside the system. I'll have to take it in when i get a chance. Thanks for the help

My xB has a slight wistle when the fan is on full speed. My Matrix did the same. Might just be a Toyota thing.

Interesting. I mean, the sound is easily drowned out either by driving or by music...I just don't want any problems to occur on my new baby! (not so new anymore I suppose )

Don, have you ever had it checked out on your xB or matrix? if so, any fix? if not, did it/has it led to any problems?

I never really worried about it. It was never loud enough to get on my nerves... Most passengers wouldn't even notice unless I pointed it out, but my ears are tuned to hear every little thing.

Never led to any A/C or fan problems.

Thanks. I'm the same as you - I hear any little thing and it gets on my nerves as I want perfection from my car. Glad to hear it didn't lead to any problems. Maybe i'll just ignore it for now. Thanks for the help!

Hopefully people have not yet stopped watching this thread because there is one more thing that I think is noteworthy to add:

The sound ONLY happens when all of the doors/windows are shut. When the door is open (for example) there is NO sound.

Same hear, I played with my ac a lil today. I hear the sound when all vents are open, but it gets magnified when I close one or more vents. Also, it only makes a noticible noise at higher settings and the noise magically disapears when you crack a window or open the sunroof. I may take it to a dealer before this weekend becuase I am doing a complete audio install over the long holiday weekend. Eclipse deck, rainbow speakers, raamat, id sub, 2 usamps, knu wiring, and I don't want the dealer to say I f'd somehting up.

Well after driving to my night class and back, I now noticed that along with the a/c making sounds, when I accelerate, I was hearing water swooshing from side to side. Long story short, the entire bottom of my car is soaking wet. My mom's camry had this problem and they had to either replace or repair one of the hoses....looks like im going to the dealership 1st thing in the morning!!
