Default ANNOYING tapping noise whenever hitting a bump

Alright, this is DRIVING ME UP THE WALL.

Started about a month and a half ago just before the nasty bouts of snow hit Denver 6 weeks in a row. Anytime I go over a moderate to really rough bump, something inside my car taps. I can't quite identify what the noise is, but it sounds like it's coming from the passenger side of the windshield. Thinking I had a rock or something under the plastic cowl by the windshield wipers, I took that off and found nothing. I've taken everything out of my glovebox, center console, and even the map pockets in the door, and the noise still persists. Just a single, but hard tap noise.

Any thoughts before I rip out all my hair in frustration?

I had the same problem, Do you have aftermarket springs on? I've heard of bolts coming loose on top that make a rattle, other than that I dunno man, Happy Hunting! lol

It's definitely a tap. It's not a rattle. But to answer your question, yes. I have full TRD suspension from springs/struts/rear sway/strut tower

i know what sound your talking about... i have that same sound. I think what i found out is that it only happens when it is cold. once my car has warmed up enough it stops. Its been 0-10 degrees this weekend so it makes that noise alot.

x2. good post.

this confirms my suspicion that it is cold weathe related. cuz i noticed it first a few days after my trd strut/shock install.

but it went away the next day when it warmed up a bit.

it sounded to be to be coming from the firewall/bottom of windshield/front of dash.

its fine, don't take anything else apart.

I have the noise, only happens when below freezing. Annoying as hell. Stock except for *tint*.
I cut off plastic tabs at the top of the windshield and bent the metal around them per the TSB, and it didn't do anything.

If you didn't hear it before the weather got cold in the last week or so, then you probably have the same noise I do.

omg! i have been b-ching to the dealer about this problem to no avail! i bought it 01/19/2006 and 1/20/2006 i took it back ! the car is paid in full and wanted a refund but they talked me out it and promised me it was nothing 4 dealers in Baltimore and 2 dealers here in atlanta all say the same!it is a issue, i have hotchkis springs ready to install but im scared to because i think the suspension assembly may fall apart! but only when its cold does my car feel brittle, loud and less sexy! (but i think its the weather)

if this helps my car was manufactured December of 2005 maybe by the manf. dates we can alert scion to do a recall or something i dunno

if its one of those things that it only does it when its cold, we won't get any help from Scion/dealership.

No matter what, when you bring it up there, they'll say they couldn't recreate the sound, even if it was doing it when you dropped it off.

its one of those things thats just more of a hassle to them than its worth to fix it.

and plus, since its not a safety concern, they really have no obligation to fix it.

its just a defect/flaw/characteristic of the car we bought. You get what you pay for...

it is disappointing though, when you buy something expecting TOYOTA QUALITY, and you get Kia.

About 8" inboard from the top of each A-pillar, underneath the headliner there are two metal tabs. There is a plastic hook inside a hole in the metal tab. The TSB involves breaking off the plastic hook, and bending the tab so it doesn't contact the plastic on the windshield (that the hook was attached to).
I did this and still have the noise. My noise is temperature related.
