Audio help for newbie.
just picked up 2 audiobahn 10' subs w/ dual voicecoils @ 4 ohms. want to get a 600 watt amp, but what else would be necessary for the amp to have? channels and so forth? got all the other info i need for installing with stock HU, just need to know what i need to invest in. thanks for the help in advance everyone.

Get a new HU, it makes all the difference!
600 watt RMS.....? that is a ____ ton.
you wanna look at RMS ratings.
Just put a sub in my car, got an alpine amp, with a JL audio 10w0.
the amp is I think 200 watt RMS, and the Sub is 125 RMS. Plenty of "bump" for me.
Sound is amazing!

both are 300 rms with peak @ 600. figured a 600 amp would be good enough to run both voice coils on both subs. was i incorrect in my thinking?

Well the RMS is where they are going to work at cleanly and not have issues with clipping, they will hold more power but not advised to push it.
They are dual 4ohm so you can wire them to run at either 4 ohms or 1 ohm.
So you will need an amp that will give you say 800w at either 4 ohm or 1 ohm.
Giving the amp some head room to run the subs will help keep you at the most power it can cleanly send without clipping....clipping destroys amps and subs pretty quick.
There are a lot of sites that you can goto to see how to wire the subs and also how to tune the amp.
There is even a topic on SL here I wrote up on how to tune the amp.....it is much easier than most will think it is and saves a lot of money by not over powering subs and pushing amps to their limit.
Take your time and read up on how to tune and wire and you will be fine.

No you are correct. If you want to run the subs at the maximum RMS value then you would need an amp that provides sufficient wattage.
in your case 2x300=600. So you would need a 600+ RMS amp.
But there is nothing wrong with using a smaller amp either. You just won't get the full potential of the subs.
Oh I lied about my RMS numbers. looked them up today, and the amp is 300 watt RMS, and My sub has a 100 to 300 range.
But I've ran a 300 watt sub on a 150 watt amp, and it sounded just fine. Just remember that the amp limits what you can do with your system. and be careful of clipping/distortion, back off on the gain/volume til it sounds right.

Sorry about my french in my earlier post, call me old school, but I hate when some guy is driving down the street and all you can hear is *rattle rattle rattle* I like to keep my setups around 300 watts RMS, as to not wake the neighbors......
Also cuts down on cost tremendously. Wattage is the most expensive part of systems. I spend that saved money on a nice head unit
Quality over quantity as they say.

My hatch garnish is broken so my rattle is like 12x as intense as it should be.
It annoys me. I really need to get that fixed...
But to be honest, the box you choose for whatever subs you get is probably one of the most game-changing factors in the car audio world. If you have awesome subs and a sweet amp but put it in a semi-decent box, the potential of your setup is shot.

its two audiobahn dub 100 10" in a pro audio box. my neighbors will hate me. the cost is definitely a factor. ill buy a used head unit but not a used amp. ill screw up my own stuff thank you. a friend of mine had a sub sealed intogot her spare tire well in the back of her honda. its got some ideas running through my head. I need to get a life. Anyone know some good bass test tracks? thanks for all the help guys. i really really appreciate it.
mmm bassss. can't get enough of it. if your only runnin 300 watts, you may as well not even waste your trunk space.
Bass test tracks. Want some good bass? Check out these artists:
DJ billy E (famously known for beats 4 my van)
Bass mekanik
I'm running 1000w on a sub that starves for 1500w (for sure going for 1500w this summer). you know you have enough bass when your visors, sunroof and mirrors are barely holding in place.

used to have a 1200w xplod in a saturn sl. it sounded like the tinman break dancing on the outside, but inside was fantastic. sooner or later ill put more oomph into my system, but its a family car, and i dont think they make a kidney belt for my 1yr old daughter.
ive had audiobahns and if you run 600rms to them youll kill them, shoot for more like 150-200 to each and youll be fine, forget the HU and and issues, the box will make all the issue, ported=rap, sealed=rock, if you listen to both use a ported and get an amplifier with a gain **** so it can be turned down on rock or itll distort like crazy, i ran a pair of audiobahn eternals till they died and replaced everything with kicker, look for some components and youll be alot happier too
if i got a 1600 watt wiring kit from scosche, budget bullcrap, would i just need a different fuse or will the guage cause any negative effects? i figure having a capacitor will keep my electric flowing smoothly, and help me keep options open for the bigger and better.
Wireing is important to the system as well......there is the basic wallmart kit you can get for $22........works fine.
But you can also step up the quality of the wires from $40 kits to hand building your own kit that can run in the hundreds
If you plan on just building a good system for normal everyday use a kit from STinger is fine......
For a more high end kit try www.knukonceptz.com you can buy the wire by the foot, their RCAs are very good quality, and their power wire is some of the nicest I have used......but it can get spendy.
4 gauge should be fine for a system power wire.....once you hit over 1000w 0 gauge recomended, basically because it will supply less resistance for the power to run on.......
Of course the Capacitor debate, honestly I have not needed one,but it can be of help to a system in some cases, plus they do look nice. They can help with big bass drops but honestly i have never managed to get my lights to dim or experianced any voltage drop on system when the bass hits.
Take your time and do lots of research and of course ask questions, you will get lots of differant answers, but that is good because many people try many differant things, you learn what works and what dont.

here is one of the most helpful sites i was shown a few years back
www.diymobileaudio.com
make an account and spend a few weeks reading, you will be amazed at how much you can learn there.
Also if you have some local Scion people that get together where you live my guess is one of them knows how to do a nice system install and can give you some hands on help even.
