If plugging up your portable MP3 player is gonna' be a big deal for you, get the
Alpine IVA-W200. I haven't seen it in action personally, but my understanding is that it has no delay when navigating and selecting tracks from the player. If the MP3 player thing is not an issue for you (my case), and you're interested in surround sound while watching your movies (like me), I would recommend the Kenwood DDX-8017. 5 preouts for that 5.1 experience. Or, if neither of the two above really fit your bill, go with the Kenwood DDX-7017. It has 3 preouts as opposed to the 8017, but costs less, and more than likely will be enough for what you're lookin' for. The Eclipse models are nice, but I think they are out of the range you stated.
As far as what I have, I bought the DDX-8017 at retail price (bought it and had it installed at an audio shop, yes I could have done it myself, but I wanted the warranty), and I gotta' tell ya', this baby is fire. Threw in Serenity the other night and awe man, I had to check my shorts. Regardless of which one you choose though, I doubt you'll regret it.
Do keep in mind the suggestions the others are givin' ya', I'm just telling you what my research and preferences led me to, and those were the ones I ended up putting in my final list.

Didn't have the reciever turned on at the moment though. If you want more pics of the head unit, lemme' know and I'll see what I can do. (I VERY rarely use a camera, so I don't own one)
If you want a very detailed picture of the units face, head over to Kenwoods site and look at the products menu.
I'm also in the market for an indash. Can anyone recommend me a double din touchscreen unit that has: navi, dvd vcd mpeg mp3 player, and tv tuner? something under 1000, I know thats a LOT to ask for, but anyone have suggestions, thanks
