Default Buying Speakers Online

Is buying speakers online a good decision? Dude at the local audio shop told me that I'm taking my chances with warranties and getting refurbished speakers if I do this? I was thinking about getting all my equipment from onlinestereo.com and doing it on my own. Is this a trustworthy place? Also, how do u feel about someone installing equipment whos never done it before, but is very tech minded and is going to have someone over his back who knows about circuitry and wiring but not much about audio. He knows how to make it work, but not the specifics of what works best.

Sounds kind of like the local guy just wants you to buy from him. Generally unless the item online actually says refurb or something, you'll get something new - unless it's a shady business and you shouldn't be shopping there anyways.

As for install... I think it depends on how much you're installing. A local shop could usually do better running wires and making it look pretty (at least, better than I could). I could wire and hook everything up, it just might not be perfect looking.

x2

I'm not horribly familiar w/ onlinecarstereo.com though so I can't give you a review of their service. I've bought all my stuff online since I got into car audio, and due to extreme paranoia, have never let another soul touch installs in my car.

As far as how to install...link in the sig, I'm pretty sure there's even pics of where my wire went, and if you have any questions, just ask, most of us here are more than happy to help

I have bought a lot of stuff from onlinecarstereo.com and never had a problem.
A couple of years ago I bought a Kenwood HU and it broke. Called Kenwood up and they told me to bring it to Circuit City. I eneded up getting a store credit for much more then I paid for it.

Not messing with ebay spending this money. But I probably will order onlinestereo.com. Here is what I'm thinking of getting. Maybe a different HU. Probably and double din....

OnlineCarStereo.com

JL 12w3 Sub $129.00
JL XR650-Csi (6.5) $248.00
JL VR525-CXi (5.25) $115.00

Total: $1,320.00

Here is what dude was trying to charge....

AudioMasters

Alpine CDA-9856 HU $210.00
Ipod Cable $30.00
JL Slash Series 500/5 Amp $700.00
JL 12w3 Sub $165.00
JL XR650-Csi (6.5) $325.00
JL VR525-CXi (5.25) $150.00
Parts $120.00
Box $150.00
Labor $204.00

One huge, HUGE thing about buying from shops instead of online. You will NOT get ANY warranty for a JL product online...they have NO authorized online dealers.

Basically that's all stuff that one of their distributors/shops sold to look like they were moving through product faster than they really are and keep their authorized status.

You might be getting a better deal, but you'll get no support from JL and actually aren't really supporting them and their dealer network at all.

I get all my stuff from www.ikesound.com they typically have a better price than anyone else. for example, my premier p860 was onli 320 from them, as opposed to 375 from online car stereo. and their shipping isnt bad either.

If you want to buy speakers on-line buy products from manufactures who authorize internet sales (most of them except JL Audio). I can tell you that if you were to purchase a JL Audio driver on the internet, it would have been cut open and glued back together in an effort to remove the serial numbers. When the glue fails and the speaker rips apart, the re-cone charge is roughly 50% of MSRP plus $50 re-serialization fee.

I think I've changed my mind on JL's now. Buying them online sounds like a bad idea and the dude that's going to do this said he wasn't really pleased with JL components. He said yes on the sub no on the components. He said the like Boston Acousitics for components. I'm thining Infinity Kappa series myself. Who knows.... so many freaking choices.... buy the way does anybody know of a double din HU that can control the ipod like the factory HU does....
