Cutting down the Shifter?
my friend asked me if i wanted to cuz down the **** since it looked really high. i have a threading tool that can re-thread rod. is that a good idea?
planning to switch to a short shifter but not anytime soon.
anyone recommend this?

No its dumb and probably unsafe. I suggest you just purchase a short shifter and call it a day. You can install one in less then a hour and its easy on your wallet. Basically you get what you pay for.
Cutting the shifter isnt that stupid. its still reducing the length of the shifter and does not compromise any safety. It'll look a lot better and will shorten the throw slightly. However, it will take more force to shift now.

Doc I does NOT just cut it.. he moves the pivot ball.
thus actually shortening the throw properly.
just cutting the stock shifter will just make it harder for you to shift... and will barely do much to shorten the throw..
it will however.. i guess.. just make it look shorter.. it's more an aesthtic thing at that point.
as far as recommending someone do it?
i'm gonna say no.

TWM Stage 2 short shifter. I recommend this, its simple and functional. I had mine TWM SS for over 2 years with no problems besides a little play here and there but nothing drastic. Overall I am pleased with it.
i'll respond...if your doing it for looks than ya its fine...i had another one laying around so i decided to just mess around with it and now i actually have it chopped pretty low...didnt do it bc i was "shortening the throw" bc i know i wasnt. i just did it bc i didnt wanna waste money on a short shifter if i didnt need it.
you also dont need to make new threads on it...a new shiftknob usually has 3 allens on it. you can push the plastic peice down inside of the shift **** on the shifter and than pretty much push the shift **** down onto the plastic peice and tighten up the allens ...i've had no problems with mine and its just for asthetics. go for it you have nothing to loose..

Honestly, it will make it harder to shift and I don't see why this would be any worse than a bought short shifter. When Doc I cuts his, he moves the pivot up to reduce throw. This actually makes it harder on you even if you weren't to cut the top of the shifter. It's basic force*distance. The bottom of the shifter (which has all the connections to the transmission) is lengthened between the pivot point and the bottom. This means more force is needed to move the bottom of the shifter. Add that with cutting the top part, it becomes even harder.
Anyways, it's not going to be that hard to shift. I have the Doc I 2" lowered short shifter and it doesn't bother me with shifting at all.

^Thanks for all the responces guys. Im acctually doing something different that I know alot of you are going to dislike but im doing it just to give it a test run. I appreciate your opinions
I've been considering this myself, the **** i have on my shifter seems too high, and I've done this before (on my previous car - a Focus) and it worked out pretty well then; I just threaded it with a die and then cut the top off with a hacksaw, never had any problems with it and I had that car for about 7 years... I figure it's worth a shot if the alternative is just replacing the whole thing with a short throw shifter anyway.
Hmmm, short throws can be had for 100 or less, or you can ghetto chop it and possibly mess it up. Which would a smart person do? Just buy a short shifter and get the benefit of a shorter stick plus a shorter throw.

in my own personal car, no. but i have friends who have.. and there is a difference.
whether or not it is significant for you to notice or not.. even the laws of physics will say it is harder to shift.
as i mentioned.. hard to shift? probably not... harder? then yes. even if it's slight and unnoticable in your case... if you're saying cutting the shifter doesn't make it harder to shift.. clearly you didn't cut enough to feel a difference..
go ahead and cut a few inches off more and then tell me that cutting makes no difference in difficulty of shifting.
