Has anyone replaced the factory 8" with a more powerful aftermarket 8" sub in the factory box ?

Was just wondering if the factory amp & box could handle it.

I am old school & after 7 minuets of Check Out My Melody, I realized the rear sub could use an upgrade. But if I burn up the factory amp in my fiance's Tc, she is going to burn me up

We like the room we save with the stock setup so I hope this can be done without ill effects.

 

The tC has a factory 10" in the corner... all you need is a sub that'll work in that amount of airspace... You'll also have to run new wiring and get an aftermarket amp and a line level converter to attach to the factory HU

 

So there is no way to just pop a new sub in & roll with it then ? You actually have to go through all of that.

 

yeah, AFAIK, the factory amp would not be enough power for most aftermarket subs... plus I don't know what ohm load it's stable at...

 

I agree with the whole new amp thing, but consider me a car audio noob. What do you mean by a line level converter? I just replaced my sub and installed an aftermarket amp. It works pretty decent.
If you have the bazooka setup then it's pre wired for a remote wire and speaker signal wires, you just need a power wire and ground.

But yeah the factory amp is weak, it's inside the bazooka box and is not much bigger than a business envelope.

 

the line level converter will take speaker level signal wires and turn them into RCA level signal wires... if the aftermarket amp has speaker level inputs, then no line level converter is needed

do u have any pics of ur setup? also which sub/amp did u go with? Sounds like a good idea to me if my sub goes out.

It's not that tough to do. I found a used 10" kicker on ebay for 45 shipped and a brand new kenwood amp off ebay for 140 shipped.

and used the same sub because then I knew it would fit. Not being sure what mounting depth I had to have. By the way, thanks yellot00tr I kinda copied your setup

You know, I was going to measure it before I installed it, but got excited and forgot
I have to do some work on it this weekend. I'll measure it then and post up....
