Default FOUR 10" subs in a tC??? YES! (Using ED's SQ10 subs)

Previously I showed off my fiberglass dual 10” sub box for the right side of the “trunk”, beside the tire. (https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=170688)I’ve now finished with the left side as well! It took longer since I had to customize the size of the piece to fit there. It’s not totally finished off, but it’s proof of concept. I have to make some minor alterations. While the right side is pretty much the same size as the foam piece you remove, the left side was far too small to have subs. The box now extends over the tire to make room for the two 10s. It doesn’t get in the way of anything - the tire is able to stay there, while you have FOUR 10” subs! These fit like a glove, meaning they’re nice and tight, but still easily removable if you want to take them out for any reason.

I know many have asked about these and originally I suggested $300 for the box alone. Some thought that sounded good, while others said it was too high. If I had to hand make each one, forget it. $300 would be my base price. Even after having my molds to work with now, it’s still a MESSY job and TIME CONSUMING. If you’ve worked with fiberglass before, you know. If you haven’t, just take my word for it. Breathing in resin fumes for hours on end is not fun.

Sooooo….

I’ve convinced my brother to take on the job. As long as an order of at least 20 pieces per side can be gathered, he’ll do a mass production run of them. He already produces hockey goalie masks, helmets and other poop, so I’ve asked him to consider these as well. The upside – instead of being hand made by me, which means they’re all a little different, they’ll be turned out each as an exact duplicate. They’ll be done faster than I can do ‘em. And they’ll be CHEAPER.

How cheap?

How about $225 per box. (minus the subs of course).

Buy both and I’ll give a $25 discount, so both right and left side for $425.

Shipping on these varies by location. Depending on your location to me (Torrance, CA), it’ll be anywhere from $15 to $40. A 2nd box can be added for about $5-10 more.

I’ll have color options as well. I covered my original with just some truck bed liner. I think simply painting them is the way to go. The truck bed liner nicked up just by my fingernail. But then again, I was somewhat impatient with the first one as you can tell by the unsanded exterior and probably didn’t give it sufficient time to dry.

Now let’s see if Chris will give us a group buy discount on some SQ10s! Hey Chris, we can buy up to 4 of those bad boys per car! Whatta ya say???

I’m starting up a interest list here. Put your name down if you're genuinely interested in one. Once we hit 20 for each, then I know we can go forward with it. Turn around time is 1-2 weeks. They’ll come prewired from the connection terminals, so all you need to do is just hook those wires to your subs, drop ‘em in, screw ‘em in and put the boxes in the car. I’ll include detailed instructions for wiring, screwing in the subs and installing in the car for those who have never had a sub box before. Screws will be provided as well, along with pilot holes drilled, so all you need is a screwdriver!

OF COURSE YOU NEED AN AMP TO HOOK THESE TO.

Check out the pics to see my install. Again, thanks to Golden86 for the idea. He used, and I copied, an Alpine MRP-M650. I used ½” MDF cut to fit the inside of the spare tire wheel well. I ran all the wires underneath and up through holes cut into the MDF to attach the audio cables, speaker wires, power, ground and remote wires. You can use any amp you like. I like this because, as Golden86 stated, it’s just about the exact size of the inside wheel well, so it sits nicely on the MDF “stand”.

BME came by today to check it out. He had a “virgin car” (no dynamat in the back), so I got a chance to test fit it and let him hear it installed in my car. So if you want someone's hands on opinion, give him a shout. Again, a few minor alterations need to be made, but otherwise they’re both done. The shop will make ‘em all perfect and pretty, too.

Ok, so this is simply an interest list. If you like it and want one, put your name down. I'll wait a week and see how it goes. Thanks!

Eric,

You've done a great job, It was really easy to see all of the work you did to make these both.

I'm glad I'm local (30-40 Min drive - no traffic). We were able to see in my one week old 07 car if there were any changes that needed to be made. Only a couple changes needed to be done.

The set-up is real clean - The spacing was done just right, and it might look like a clean easy job, but it's time consuming.

If anyone has any questions for me.. just asking. I was able to see it first hand today and listen to it.

I can't wait to get mine!

Are you also using the ED box that fits in the right side of the trunk?

When they're done by the shop, they should be stronger and lighter. Right now, the right side weighs in at about 10 lbs. Not too bad. Haven't had a chance to get the left side weighed. It's probably a couple lbs lighter. Shipping depends on where you are in relation to me. I'm in southern California, so with you being in Ohio, figure about $30 for one box or $40 for both.

how much of an improvement would just the right side be over the stock bazzoka sub?

I've never heard the stock bazooka, but from what I've read by others on here, the SQ10's blow that away. Do a search and see what comes up. And by "just the right side", it's pretty booming with 2 SQ10's. When I finish the left and hook up FOUR, it'll be sick...

I haven't heard it, but I can guess: It will be like the difference between a Mickey D's hamburger and a 2" thick Angus Rib Eye.

What I'm impressed with:

1) Sealed (don't see much of that)
2) You still have a trunk and spare tire access. Very Nice.
3) Seems like great work that you spent a lot of time on.

Thanks. Yeah, the left side especially was a lot of work. I had to customize the foam by expanding it out about as far as it could comfortably go. And even then, the SQ10s just barely fit.

I think to finish it off, I'm going to cut a piece of MDF for the center to make it a flat finish. I'll have some supports so it sits even with the two sub boxes, then have a cut out window for the amp and put some cold cathodes in there to make it pretty. Then comes the trunk cover with holes cut out for the subs to fire through and grills put in to cover everything up nicely. I'll post more pics as I continue on with it.

What's the internal volume of the left side enclosure? I know it's possible to make one for the right side that has just enough space for 2x SQ10, but I don't see how that would be possible for the left side.
