Can this be done? Thought about getting some racing seats a while back, but spent the money on a camera instead over the summer. But in the event that I get the money, I may get some Corbeau Forza seats and was wondering if there was any way to have harnesses w/o having a huge bar running across my backseat.

And if I did have to install a bar...will there be holes if I remove it? Will the backseat be easily accessible to passengers?

Pics of harness bars are welcome, as well as ways any of you may have installed harnesses without bars...

I know people have run the harness to the bolts in the back seat, rendering the rear seat useless. I know with some harness bars you must cut into the b-pillar. About this size of a half dollar. This is really the safest way to use the harness. Now some will say its not safe to use on the street blah blah blah. But I hope someone else will chime in with some more information.

just dont use a bar and tighten up the slack on the harness...it looks like its mounted via a bolt at the bottom near the bracket. not the safest way but it works.

having a harness without a roll cage is not safe in general...

Uh so many little rules on how to mount them. Does anyone know of a website that states official rules on mounting harnesses and the correct way to do it?

 

Harnesses without a bar are VERY dangerous in any sort of front end collision. The harnesses will pull down instead of back, and compress your spine. Meaning even a relatively small collision can be very damaging.

Even a properly installed bar and harness can be more dangerous than stock without a cage. If the roof crushes with OEM belts, your upper body can move a good ways to the side.. with harnesses it cannot.

The only way I would run a harness without a bar is strictly on an autox course to help keep my body in place. In that scenario there is no risk of collision .

thats a horrible thing to say mostly when its your LIFE. it'd be different if it was an exhaust or something but you're life???? do you really want to settle?

 

Better than no belts maybe... in some situations.. but not in any way better than stock belts if you arent going to run the harness bar. I personally wouldnt want an otherwise small collision turning into a life of spine issues.

i have a set for autox.. and without a harness bar... as engifineer mentioned, would only use it for such.

this is a modification that affects your safety, so make the right decisions.

 

Makes me nervous regardless of what method you are doing. I wish they had a way to have a three point harness, much like a normal seat belt. But when your at the track add a sub-harness (the one that goes between your legs).

 

i have mine bolted to the rear seat belt bolts and just threaded the harness through the holes in the back seats where the seat belts usually go. i still have my back seats in and they are functional.

you could always just buy seats and run stock seatbelts...

i will have an alternative to a hraness bar coming up in the next couple months.

i cant say much but i can say its going to be very expensive, time consuming, and hard to reverse. (most of you will prob figure out what it is just from that)

 

I did a co-op with the "crash testing" group at Toyota and honestly, I would rather wear no belts than a improper harness on the street. At least the dashboards are tested for head impact and the windshield has some give. Any small amount of uneven bending of the spine can cause major problems when its a jerky movement.

P.S. - Sometimes with a cage it really helps to reinforce the unibody rails and then tie the cage into them so it is more like a sphere and not so much a hemisphere. There was a world of difference when I finally tied the cage in my Camaro to its subframe connectors.
