Hey, i wanted to install an autometer c2 volts gauge but i dont know how i would hook it up and to which wires. Can someone please tell me. i am kind of new at this thing. i tryed searching.. thanks much.. Btw can you hook it up to ur amplifier?
Well, if its like most voltage gauges, you probably have 4 wires on it. The first 2 should be for the actual voltage measuring part. One wire is positive and one is negative. The negative (ground) wire needs to be grounded to bare metal on the car, preferable in the kick panel and not on the various brackets under the dash. Be sure to scrape back any paint and make the connection nice and tight to bare metal. (The same goes for ANY ground).
The other wire, positive, should be connected to whatever you would like to read the voltage of. If you just want to read the voltage of your cars electrical system when the key is on, I would personally tie into the cars ignition wire located in the ignition harness. On our car, this wire is blue. This will cause the gauge to act like the gauge that is built into most other cars from the factory.
If you go straight to the battery with this positive wire, then the gauge will always read instead of only reading when the key is on. This may kill the battery depending on how much juice the gauge pulls.
If you would like to read the voltage that an amp is receiving, then connect the positive wire of the gauge to the main power wire on your amp...keep in mind, the main power wire on your amp should be constant, meaning it always has power going to it even when the car is off, so this means that the voltage gauge will always be measuring and reading voltage. Again, just like above, this is the same as connecting the gauge to the battery (since the main power wire on your amp IS connected to the battery). Soooo, it may kill the battery.
The 2 other wires should be for the light that is built into the gauge. One of these wires should be ground (do the same as before, put to bare metal) and the other wire should be connected to a wire that has 12v+ when the parking/headlights are on. On our car, this is a brown wire, located at the top of the fusebox. There is a 30 pin plug located there, and pin #29 should be the brown wire. Connecting the positive light wire from your gauge here should cause the gauge to light up only when the other dash lights are on as well!
Whew! That was a lot!
Hope this helps...If you have any questions, ask...I'll help if I can...
