HVAC/ Voltage Regulator Help!!!
I'm using a 15w pencil tipped iron. I was doing my led swap last night. and couldn't get the voltage regulator off.
I tried heating the metal tab on back as i was supposed to.
But the end result was he black chip part of it breaking away from the metal/copper tabs.

Any suggestions on how to remove it? Would it be feasible to just solder new regulator down on top of old tab/copper plate?
Would it work? I love clean, but will settle for working order.
also, my new regulator is 3x the size of original, is this normal. as it barely fits in the alloted space.

Any suggestions would be very helpful.

fixed! noticed copper didnt want to take solder or come loose. so i just cleaned up the area, trimed tab off new regulator, held fimly, and soldered legs. seems to have worked just fine. big smiles for my newly recolored hvac.

not too shabby for a first time solder'r, im happy. i should have took picts of my solder work, they looked alot cleaner then i thought i would have done. Kudos Taco!
time to move onto the cluster/radio.

seems like all the links i can find are old & outdated
I found the LEDs and Resistors no problem
but cant find the voltage regulator.
the only info i found on a old post was
"Positive10 volt 1.2 amp regulator"
i can do the work but im not skilled nearly enough in electronics to figure out what the right regulator is
If you have any luck figuring it out lmk
im going to replace all the leds and resistors to see if it works at all with out the regulator

Hey guys my name is MikeL
I've been searching this site trying to find out where I can possibly find out where I can find the right part. All the links are outdated I have the LEDs and resistors but I can't seem to find any info on the regulator.
Can you skip the regulator and still have it work?

so i purchased the regulator you suggested to me i just received it in the mail today it is the right shape and size looks exactly alike.
im pretty sure that it will work once i get around to doing the actual work (hopefully by next week) i will update you on if it works or not.
Its rated +10v 1amp so im pretty content on it being the closest available.
Thanks for your help i hope i helped in return.

I changed almost all the LEDs from Amber to Blue leaving a few such as airbag lights stock. I changed out the 7 or 8 Resistors and plugged it in and they all light up plenty bright enough.
So unless someone can explain why that VR was recommended to be swapped I'm just going to leave it alone.
Sorry, I'm not sure how to add a picture that has already been taking but once I put it back together, I will add a picture for you to see.

That looks great! Im going to be doing the swap on my 2006 xB in the next week or so. I think that VR will also work for mine. Im planning to change all the LEDS to blue.
Do you think the BA17810FP-E2 is comparable to the SP-3SU package +10V regulator 1.2A that is recommended? I just want to make sure.
Thanks for any help!

Dont bother with the voltage regulator you dont need it i was worried about it myself but i just did the leds first and they worked fine.
I got my leds from www.oznium.com (PLCC-2 surface mount LEDs)
And the resistors off ebay (search. 1206 smd/smt )
just make sure you get a few extra incase you melt any and install them in the right direction. I grabbed a evtra HVAC unit from the junkyard to practice on. I actually have all the resistors and probably enough left over LEDs to do the job. If your interested i could put them together with the voltage regulator that i didnt bother using. Lmk what its worth to you if its worth my time going to the post office and paying shipping i could sell you more then enough resistors of all needed and id have to count how many blue leds i have left.
when i did it there wasnt anyone to really help since its old threads so i know how it feels so if you have any questions im willing to help! One thing you need to watch out for is the needles on the gauges when you get to that ill give you a couple do's and dont's .
hope that helps bud.

1 thing i forgot to mention is that the led screen is very easy to crack if you dont get all the solder off. I have extra screens and the desoldering braid and suction pump and a extra board .Like i said if your interested ill put everything plus more together as a package. Got a xtra Soldering iron also.
