yea splicing the IGN is fine as long as you arent running too much power. i tapped my IGN for all my LEDs [currently 11 of them], and have not had a problem with it at all.

Just trying to power a small circuit when the engine is running.

The way those quick splice devices cut into the wire makes make nervous. What size quick splice should I use on the ign wire?

Worst connectors ever made, so I suggest using something else. I know they're convenient so people like them, but the connection they make is marginal and they're prone to failure when compared to other types.

I suggest you take a look at these, which is what I use. You get 12 (easy to cut apart) for a reasonable price, they're reuseable, make a great connection and will not fail.

If you are really that nervous then i suggest stripping the ign wire back and soldering on your new wire, then tapping it back up, solid connection, as long as you do it right.

What are other wires near the interior fuse box that is similar to the IGN wire? When I say similar I mean a wire that is hot when the engine is on like the ign wire.

I designed this PIC based circuit that would turn my headlights on/off depending on the ambient light level.

It's quick very easy to get to the wire behind the cigarette lighter. You can tap into the black wire going into the center rear of the lighter, which is hot when the key is in the acc position. I spliced in one of those euro style terminals there, to connect an additional wire, no prob at all.
