Default iPhone Compatibility

The iPod cable included for the 2009 Scion tC works with the iPhone, in that it plays audio, but it isn't able to charge it. Anyone know of any alternatives?

If you want it to charge....

Aftermarket HU is your only alternative I believe....

Not to hi-jack, but I have the same issue with my 08. I have been reading around and we could possibly make our own cable. Will update once I have more

no, you don't need an aftermarket HU to charge the iPhone 3G in a tC.

you can purchase this:

http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-333...2668589&sr=8-1

it's a USB based car charger with a ipod-cable pass-through
this means it'll charge the phone from the cigarette lighter, and still play using from the scion ipod cable plugged into the botton of the adapter.

if you have an issue with this bulky thing at the base of your iphone all the time, you can purchase an ipod extension cable from http://www.cablejive.com

i have the above kensington charger, and a 6ft cable-jive ipod extension cable, and both combined allowed me an out of the way, iphone charging/playing capable system with my '06 (all scion audio's are based off firewire for the ipod charging, and now the iphone 3g can only charge from usb, so too bad..) premium audio, and now my Avic-D3 which had the same problem.

the issue like i said above is that the iPhone 3G will only charge from 5V USB and not the usual 12V FireWire that car ipod hookups have been based on (because it was easier and cheaper than to include the resistor)

this WILL solve your problem, no weird making your own cable mess, relatively cheap, and DOES work.

in fact, i would love if this information got added to a sticky somewhere, because this question is asked in a ton of forums all the time.

Hey optional, which Scion cable is required so the 3G will play as well? If I get the kensington adapter to charge, what else is needed?

cablejive now has an adapter that allows the iphone 3g to charge using the existing cable
http://www.cablejive.com/iphone_3g_c...converter.html
the adapter simply converts the old firewire power which the new iphones and ipods do not use to the usb power which the new iphones and ipods do use.
Me? I just bought an old beatup ipod for $50 on craigslist which I leave permanently connected in the glovebox. Not much more money than all this converter nonsense, and now I don't have to deal with connecting and disconnecting my iphone every time I get in the car.

Nothing else, the stock cable is all you need. It plugs into the bottom of the kensington adapter.

Thanks optional and whiteymarvin. This should get sticked so people won't complain about multiple threads coming up.

yeah, it's the iPhone 3G that has the problem, the old iPhone worked fine.

and FPcelica, that's the same thing as cablejive's adapter, same concept anyway, I'm actually happier with my earlier solution as far as usefulness goes. I love having this longer cable.
