modify stock shifter
it's been done... but I don't remember what size tap you would use... I think we just used the first tap we had lying around and it worked... then I went and got a REAL short throw shifter.
Well, it won't actually shorten the throws, but if you're going purely for aesthetics, it would meet your needs I suppose. I believe the thread is 12x1.25mm, but you should verify that.

No it's not the same. Compare a stock shifter to the one he sends you... The length from the bottom of the shifter to the pivot is different, resulting in a shorter length you have to move the shifter to engage the gears. by just cutting off the top of the shifter, you're decreasing how much the shifter sticks up, but not how much movement is required to shift.
But again, if all you care about is making it a shortened shifter, not a short-throw shifter, it would work. There are also other benefits to Doc I.'s package though... Increased responsiveness and reduced slopyness in shifting.

and what does that have to really do with having a shorter throw?
and as mentioned, doc I does modify the pivot point on the stock shifter (which takes a bit of work and brute force)
with nothing else done except you cutting the shifter shorter, it'll result in more effort to shift

ive acctually thought about doing this, but Squall is right, it would take slightly more effort to shift, try shifting by grabing the stock shifter at its base and youll feel the difference
just buy a megan short shifter, 69 shipped from hopupracing.com

i did that with my perrin short throw since it was the same height as the stock shifter. i cut it down then re threaded it and it worked out just fine. i think i still have the die in my car so i can look for that and let you know what i used

^ by shifting by grabbing the base, its essentially what its gonna feel like once you cut down your stock shifter, just letting you know, and yes the megan shifter is awesome price, from what ive read its pretty damm good too
Yep, I have the megan, and it's very good for the price... I even got mine for $40 used on the classifieds on this forum. If you look around, you might be able to find one in the PPC's. The only downside is that installing it is a pain in the rear... but that's the same deal no matter what short shifter you get.
Cutting and re-tapping the stock one can be done without taking it out of the car, so it's easier, but you don't get the full benefit of a real short throw shifter.
