Default Need advice on dash DVD/nav system

I just got an 07 tc, and since I had DVD in my last car, I've decided I can't live without it and since I need to get a new one I figured I'd get one with a navigation system while I'm at it. I'm not planning on doing any serious modding, I'm just looking for something 2 din that'll fill up the space of the stock stereo, I don't want a popout screen. Ideally I want the steering wheel controls to work with whatever I get since it'd be a waste not to.

So with that said, what are some good models I should look at?

Most will tell you to check the Eclipse units.

The good thing about Eclipse is that it IS compatible with your steering wheel controls.

either eclipse or pioneer AVIC D2 or Z1..

the pioneer's can utilize the steering wheel remotes with the PAC SWI-PS

Eclipse avn5435 or the new model is avn5500. Connects right in for sw controls. Eclipse FTW!

2 more questions:

1. I have the Ipod hookup in the center console. Is this functionality retained?

2. Will I still be able to close the radio cover?

If you're asking about the Eclipse units then the answer to both of those is yes

Eclipse and Pioneer are pretty much the best and most popular for the tCs, but you might also want to checkout Alpine or Kenwood (but I think you need the seperate PAC controller for those to work with the steering wheel controls).

To close the cover using the stock brackets, you will need to drill new holes in the brackets. One hole is too far back and the other too far forward. Drill a hole on each side half way in between the 2 and it should close with no problem

About the ipod adapter, I have only heard BAD things. There is a vtr feature on the unit. Yellow, white, red composite cables. Rather than using the ipod piece that is supposed to be real garbage and expensive anyway, connect it right to the vtr (red/white) and leave the yellow alone. You won't get any picture, but you can listen fine and change the screen to nav or something. Thats what I do and it works great!

damn. i wanted this to be as close to plug and play as possible...

and change the screen to nav or something
wait, i'm confused. are you saying that in order to switch to the ipod, i have to select 'nav' mode? i have the facory ipod unit - is this the equivalent of select 'Aux'?
If so, cool - I don't plan on using the nav anyhow, I really just want the DVD player.

Excuse the nooB question, ICE is an area in which I'm definitely ignorant! lol

Ok, you completely misunderstood. Make sure you read all of what I wrote.

I was talking about using the ipod through the VTR function on the unit. The VTR is meant for video though, so it has a yellow, white, and red connection pieces. The yellow is for video, so you don't have to connect anything to that, and the white/red can hook up your ipod. Since this is meant for video, when using VTR, you will hear the music but a blank screen (since no video is hooked up).

What i'm saying, is that now you are listening to the ipod, but you don't still have to watch the blank screen. You can still listen and change the screen to navigation or anything else so your not staring at a blank screen. You do know that the unit can play audio and use navigation at the same time... Hope this helps and makes it a bit more clear.

(I do this with my satellite radio unit rather than an ipod, but its the same principal)

BTW: It really is as plug and play as possible, but you still have to tap into the speed wire for the navigation, reverse wire if you're adding a reverse camera, and lastly the parking brake wire (which I have hooked up to a switch). Then you have to run the antenna wire for the nav, etc. So it's not a simple take one out and put the new one in. There is wiring to do. The holes in the brackets though couldn't be any easier. Just take a drill, make 2 holes and then attach the brackets to the unit (there are screw holes on the unit to attach it to)
