Default need help with wiring

im trying to wire interior neons and we have a problem with the wires getting way to hot. we got a smaller gage wire and thought that would work but it didnt. do we need a fuse for the wires or is it something else? help me please

By smaller gauge I hope you meant larger wire. If you went with smaller wire, that would have made it worse.

I'm pretty sure that you're not supposed to cut the power wire of neons/cathodes.

yeah smaller gauge, is a thicker wire. we made sure all of the bare wire was covered with electrical tape so nothing was exposed and touching something it shouldn't. but if we get the fuse today, and it keeps blowing, or the wires still get hot, what could it be?
