I'm looking into doing the color swap on my stock HU to red. In the write up in the tech section it says that the LCD is illuminated with two incandescent light bulbs with amber condoms on them. Everyone seems to be replacing the bulbs with LEDs. Can anyone tell me if it would be feasible to simply replace the bulb condom with an appropriate color?

hmm... it won't look good.

the stock one on there is actually yellow that just helps the incandesant to light up the amber color...

even if you remove that.. it won't be white, but the ugly incandesant yellow.... so working with that particular color... placing another color on top won't look great.

I was just kind of like,

 

Remove those bulbs and solder LEDs in place of them with resistors in line. For red you will probably want something in the range of a 330 - 420 ohm resistor in series with each led to get the brightness right. I have not done a display on one of those in red before, so I cant say for sure.

 

i say just spend and do the LEDs. ALOT more worth it imo. i had the "condoms" on the normal stock accent lights on the headlights.. looked like poop. . do the LEDs and you wont regret it :D
