when it comes to radar detectors you never want to think best bang for the buck. there are only 2 options imo when it comes to saving your ___ from the long arm of the law, the valentine one (v1) or the escort 8500. dont even waste your money on anything else.

i swear by the v1, its saved me way more money in fines than i spent on it.

but remember if cops in your area use lasers then you are screwed no matte how much money you spend

Only defense against those is slowing down... usually its a good idea in general

this is true of the poor quality radar detectors.. the escort solo S2 has laser warning aswell. however your still pretty screwed if it goes off but at least you know theres a cop around... and the laser systems are still expensive and are on very few cop cars

I've had an Escort Passport 8500 (red display) for 2 years now and have found that the best use for it is to integrate it into what you would be doing if you were traveling above the speed limit WITHOUT a radar detector. We all know how it feels when you're in a car without radar detection: 1) you keep a good scan going looking for visible speed traps and police cars, 2) you gauge how your speed compares to other traffic (going 20 over the speed limit is a lot more noticeable when traffic is going the limit than when they're going 10 over as well), and you know areas around your city/along regularly traveled routes where cops are prevalent. With all this knowledge, the final step is to understand HOW radar is used, and how it interacts with the surroundings. First, I have noticed I can get warnings from onciming moving police cars or stationary traps up to 5 miles away (some manufacturers claim 10 miles on flat ground). This means that if I get a strong alert on a known police band of radar (you have to get experience with how automatic doors, etc. cause false alerts), I slow down until I locate the car that is radaring or feel I've gone far enough to have passed the speedtrap. Second, even small hills or changes in elevation can cause intermittent alerts. You have to understand that you could recieve intermittent alerts from 2 causes: 1) The police are using "pop-up" or instant-on radar. In this case, your best insulation is the fact that there are other people speeding out there with you. What I mean is that with radar, when the beam is hitting another car in front of (or behind) you, most likely your detector will get a decent reflection (alert). The second case 2) occurs when you have slight elevation or other line-of-sight disruptions that give an intermittent hit. In this case you have to be smart. I have found the best way to deal with this is to go slightly over the limit in the "valleys" or when a separating median or trees block your side of the road from the opposing side. Then when you approach a clearing or rise in the road, closely cover the brake or even slow down. This helps you in 2 ways. First, if the cop is on the opposite side of the road (either stationary or moving), you are making use of these lapses in their ability to spot you to sneak by. Second, if the cop is behind you, you are averaging faster than the speed limit (which most cops "obey", but not all). This way, you are slowly increasing the distance from the trailing cop until you are either out of his range or he turns off of the highway. In both these cases, you must still use good visual spotting to understand what the detector is telling you.

In short, having a detector alone is not a free pass to speed: you have to understand what this tool is telling you, understand how to use it, and also keep up your vigilance for those few situations where you get caught in a well engineered speed trap.

^^^^

I use a Passport 8500, and I swear by it, too. It's saved me from numerous tickets, and probably some jail time.

(PSA WARNING)
But, I also say that (excessively) speeding on city roads is really dangerous, pretty stupid, and impresses noone. I personally only -really- speed on the highway when there's nobody around that will go "what the deuce, I better do something stupid", and ruin my sh-. Doing 30 over on city streets is just asking for trouble, radar detector or not.

Agree to agree with you. Just do the math. Say you speed across an average size town. When you incorporate stoplights, traffic, etc. at most you save a couple minutes. If you are speeding in town JUST to impress someone, try racing up to the speed limit: the push-back-in-the-seat factor up to 40 or 50 mph is still fun. Now I see speeding as lucrative when I'm making long trips, where I can save an hour or more.
